Huntsman is seeking a Senior Ecotoxicologist supporting the Global EHS Division. This position will report to the Toxicology Team Manager.
Job Scope
The senior ecotoxicologist position in the Toxicology Team provides expert advice to all Huntsman businesses, by the application of professional judgment in ecotoxicology, exposure sciences and regulatory compliance.
This position is responsible for supporting the development and registration of Huntsman products, for using exposure data to conduct environmental risk assessments, support evaluation and authorization processes and to ensure the regulatory compliance of Huntsman products. The ecotoxicologist will have experience in standard and non-standard ecotoxicity and environmental fate methods as well as with the use of in silico tools to predict those properties. She/he will design testing and assessment strategies that minimizes animal testing without reducing the safety for the environment or human health. Expertise in exposure assessment is essential. Practical knowledge of IUCLID, CHESAR as well as the OECD toolbox and similar modelling tools is necessary.
As the Senior Ecotoxicologist with minimum supervision and heavy decision-making you will:
  • As a member of the toxicology team support all Huntsman businesses with environmental hazard and risk assessment expertise in all stages of product development (R&D of new chemicals/products and/or new markets and uses). The job holder should understand and fulfill the requirement set forth by the authorities in the different regions (TSCA, REACH, Canada, Korea, China)
  • Ensure the outsourcing of ecotoxicological/ environmental fate studies, including choice of laboratory is undertaken according to PSRC guidelines. Make suitable business recommendations, review & approve protocols, assess raw data, review draft and final study reports to ensure optimal study results thus minimizing business impact.
  • Use of in silico tools for screening & prioritization purposes as well as for use in regulatory dossiers. Prepare read-across documentation for dossier submissions.
  • Collaboration with colleagues to prepare dossier submissions in IUCLID or other formats.
  • Provide support to all Huntsman divisions for questions related to ecotoxicology. Develop strategies to minimize cost and expenditures in accordance with PSRC guidelines.
  • Be the focal point for regulatory ecotoxicology related issue management and substance defense including advocacy with regulatory bodies, actively participate in discussions and meetings with the authorities related to the businesses’ product portfolio.
  • Maintain and develop technical expertise in areas of ecotoxicology and risk assessment. Keep abreast of relevant regulations, legislation and emerging issues related to chemical hazard and risk assessment. Communicate interpretation and impact to relevant Huntsman divisions.
  • Ensure ecotoxicological, environmental fate & physical-chemical data used for the classification of Huntsman products are scientifically evaluated, are up-to -date and maintained in the appropriate PSRC databases and systems. Proactively communicate changes to stakeholders to ensure full understandings and business implications.
  • Represent Huntsman in various industry consortia and trade associations. Be an active participant in all meetings and advise and convey relevant information to stakeholders which could influence or impact Huntsman operations.
  • Follow instructions and perform other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.
  • Assist other employees in accomplishment of Huntsman company goals.
  • Participate in and complete company-required training programs.
  • Participate in Environmental, Health, & Safety initiatives as set forth by the company.
Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced Degree with typically 12 to 15 years of professional experience preferably in an international industrial company.
  • Professional experience in the Chemical, Agro-chemical, Pharmaceutical sector or at CRO.
  • Experience in Regulatory ecotoxicology, risk assessment and classification and labelling (GHS, CLP).
  • Knowledge of standard and non-standard ecotoxicological methods and environmental fate methods and well as use of in silico tools (QSARs) and read across. Experience with the IUCLID tool.
  • Experience in exposure assessment preferably with the use of tools such as EASYTRA, CHESAR.
  • Practical experience with REACH, TSCA and Canada chemical registration.
  • Experience with consortia and trade association work.
  • Fluency in English
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional certification as ecotoxicologist/ environmental scientist is a plus.
  • Ability to work with colleagues globally and in a multi-cultural environment is essential.
  • Practical experience with China and Korea chemical registration is a plus.
The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.
Remote work is an option.
