Staff Hardware Systems Engineer

We are looking for an experienced hardware technologist who lives and breathes data center metal. Reporting to the Hardware Infrastructure Engineering Manager, the Senior Hardware Development Engineer will evaluate and validate new server products as well as scale DigitalOcean's hardware development program.

The Senior Engineer will join a team who have already paved the way for the many thousands of servers in our infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be eager to face challenges associated with growing a data center footprint, including: power efficiency, firmware validation at scale, and server platform unit economics.

Our Team: The Hardware Engineering group is the arm of Infrastructure Engineering aimed at deploying and sustaining server hardware that balances customer expectations and efficiency goals by designing and validating reliable, secure and performant server platforms. The Infrastructure Engineering group, supported by the Director of Infrastructure Engineering, is made up of nearly sixty engineers located across the US, Canada, and Europe.

What You'll Be Doing:

• Lead system and board level design and validation process for DO's new hardware cloud products
• Collaborate with internal engineers and OxMs to build robust, cost-effective, purpose-built servers that provide a backbone for stellar customer products
• Drive hardware validation process from initial requirements gathering, architectural design, RFP, EVT/DVT to final NPI
• Regularly meet with product, finance, and capacity planning teams to understand product direction, requirements and unit economics targets
• Develop rigorous testing plans, acceptance criteria and stakeholder management process for multiple disciplines, including, firmware, server mechanicals and system software.
• Work with infrastructure software engineers to improve validation scripting and automation

What We'll Expect From You:

• Demonstrated excellence in leading hardware design, validation projects, and system benchmarking,
• Debugging knowledge of systemic hardware, firmware and driver issues in a data center infrastructure comprised of many thousands of hosts
• In-depth design of x86/non-x86 platforms and components, including CPUs, Storage, Memory, Accelerators, etc
• Prior participation in full-cycle ODM product development
• Low-level hardware subsystem theoretical and practical knowledge, including SerDes protocols, DDR specifications, mechanical (shock and vibration) tolerances, and power delivery mechanisms
• Experience designing and iterating PCB layouts based on hardware product requirements.

Employees may qualify for a bonus in addition to base salary; bonus amounts are determined based on company and individual performance.
