This is a contractual position responsible for providing teaching and learning to residents of an adult maximum correctional facility.GRADE14LOCATION OF POSITIONDivision of Workforce Development & Adult LearningWestern Correctional Institution (WCI)13800 McMullen HWY, S.W.Cumberland, MD 21502Main Purpose of JobThe main purpose is to teach one or more subjects to adult learners in a facility operated by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS). Work will involve providing course instruction to incarcerated adults in basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and life skills to incarcerated adult learners, helping them improve their literacy, achieve educational goals, and enhance their employability and life skills upon release.POSITION DUTIESDuties of this position include but are not limited to:• Course instruction includes life skills, resume writing, interviewing skills, job keeping skills, goal setting, job exploration, computer & keyboarding, and basic education skills (reading, writing, language, math, and GED subject matters);• Address skills to find work;• Prepare adults to be able, with little or no outside help, find work using resources;• Check roster and take attendance each class session, verifying registration;• Establish, maintain, and complete required paperwork for enrollment, data and• grant purposes.ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Candidates should have knowledge of the principles and practices of adult education; knowledge of instructional planning and teaching methods; skill in the use of assessment instrument; ability to develop appropriate educational goals and objectives; ability to communicate effectively.Minimum QualificationsExperience: Six years of experience planning and conducting employee development and training.Notes• Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience planning, conducting or coordinating training or staff development activities for the required experience.• Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in education and training classification or education and training specialty codes in the education and training field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.Desired Or Preferred QualificationsPreference may be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). The certified list can be used by LABOR for a period of one year.BenefitsContractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period.
