The employee in this position will teach employability skills, administer appropriate tests, and provide counseling to help prisoner students prepare for employment when released. Eighty percent of work week is spent in direct supervision of prisoners within the perimeters of a correctional facility. This position will assist in overseeing the delivery of Employment Readiness programming and will teach employment/release preparation skills to qualified prisoners that reflect current and future labor market trends. Areas of instruction will include Job Searching and Workplace Skills, Financial Literacy, and Introductory Computer Skills. The purpose of the program is to equip students with entry level job skills that can lead to job placement in the community upon release. Position DescriptionEducation Possession of an associate's degree in an area of the specific trade or occupation to be taught. Experience No specific type or amount is required. Possession of an appropriate bachelor's degree, master's degree, or vocational teacher certification may be substituted for the education and experience requirements. OR Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school and four years of recent experience in the practice of the specific trade or occupation to be taught, including six months of experience training others in the trade or occupation may be substituted for the education and experience requirements. This position was established with SUBCLASS CODES - TRDBUSEDUC (Business Education Technology/Employment Readiness): Four years of experience in computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, or other word processing, spreadsheet, desktop publishing, presentation, or web-based programs), and/or experience coaching others in job preparatory skills using a computer for resume and cover letter writing, employment search, and submitting on-line applications. • *If a position is assigned one subclass, the applicant selected to fill it must satisfy the subclass criteria. If a position is assigned more than one subclass, the applicant selected must satisfy at least one of the subclasses.** The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation. Some jobs require state certifications for the occupation. All positions are assigned subclass codes. Individuals appointed to positions that are subclass coded must possess the required specialized experience, training, or license. New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
