This opportunity is perfect for someone who loves working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather. This team member will assist with the maintenance and operations of the state highways, and adjacent right of ways to assure they remain in a condition that promotes the movement of traffic, and safety to the motoring public. Working in the maintenance area will require responsible, safety-minded individuals to accomplish assigned tasks and may require operating trucks as well as other heavy equipment. These positions require a quick response time to job sites. Highway maintenance crews are ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The successful candidate appointed to this unique position will serve a vital role in support of WSDOT’s mission to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options to improve communities and economic vitality.These are in-training positions that offer a career path, hands-on learning, and mentorship. These positions allow you to progress upward through the Highway Maintenance Worker series and achieve the goal class of a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. Candidates will be considered for a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or Highway Maintenance Worker 2, depending on their qualifications.Annual salary levels for each position are:Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $46,920 - $56,880Highway Maintenance Worker 2: $52,920 - $64,440What to ExpectAmong the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:• Operate a wide variety of heavy equipment in maintenance and repair of highways and highway structures.• Maintain roadways including pavement repair, drainage maintenance.• Repair and replace guardrails and signs.• Remove dangerous and hazardous debris from the roadways.• Assist in layout and set-up of traffic control, including setting up signage, manually flagging traffic, and operating attenuator/buffer truck.• Removal of snow and ice during winter season.QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 level, the following are required:• One (1) year of experience performing highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, heavy equipment, or equivalent.Note: Education from a trade school may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis. • Obtain an unrestricted• Class A CDL with “N” endorsement without air brake restriction & valid medical card to legal operate vehicles in Washington State within twelve (12) months of hire.To be considered for this opportunity at the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 level, the following are required:• Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction and no transmission restrictions, and valid medical card.• Two (2) years of experience performing highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, heavy equipment, or equivalent.OR• One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalentIn addition, candidates at either level will have:• High School Diploma or GED• Ability to respond to emergency call outs, work nights, work different and/or extended shifts on short notice (days, nights, and weekends), and perform standby duty.• Ability to transport up to 50lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.• Ability to work in all weather conditions including confined spaces, uneven terrain, and next to fast high volume highway traffic.• Ability to operate heavy equipment, and hand and power tools.• Basic computer skills to communicate and retrieve information.• Ability to work at heights above 25 feet over land or water while performing maintenance tasks.It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:• Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card• Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License• Backflow Prevention Tester Certification• Crane CertificateImportant Notes• This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.• This position is not eligible for remote work.• The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.• The salary for this position will also include an additional $3.00 per hour for Night Shift and Designated Corridor pay, which is not currently listed in the salary.• Obtaining your Commercial Driver’s License is made easier with WSDOT!
