Maintenance Mechanic 1On-CallWalla Walla Veterans HomeWDVA is recruiting an on-call Maintenance Mechanic 1 at our award-winning Walla Walla Veterans Home! In this role, you will perform general maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction duties for the Walla Walla Veterans Home.Your working knowledge of skills fields such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, and machinist work will be critical in the maintenance of our long-term care facility and grounds.If you are ready to join our team and help us continue to fulfill our mission of "Serving Those Who Served," apply today!• This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.Position(s) at this location will also receive 5% Premium Pay for facilities open twenty-four hours per day. Employees must physically work at the facility 3 days per workweek to qualify. In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.Some of what you'll do:• Perform semi-skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, welding and metal fabrication, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, and machinist work.• Under the technical direction of the Plant Manager or Maintenance Mechanic 2, perform skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, steam fitting, electrical, mechanical, and machinist work.• Operate hand tools, power tools, and other shop equipment as needed.• Perform minor repairs on building fixtures, plumbing, heating, laundry, and kitchen equipment, motors, and electrical appliances.• Operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies.• Mow, irrigate, fertilize, and maintain lawns.• Use a variety of manual tools and equipment such as weed trimmers, backpack blowers, light tractors, and lawn mowers.• Clean, service, and make repairs to tools and equipment.• Plant, transplant, trim, and water plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs.• And more!• Complete Position Description available upon request.*Required:• High school graduation or GED equivalent.• One (1) year of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade.• Valid state driver's license.• Ability to read and understand written instructions, directions, and procedures in English.Preferred/Desired:• Two (2) years of maintenance mechanic work in a medical facility, with experience in mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and plumbing skills.Special Requirements:• Must be able pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.• Must be able to perform moderately heavy physical effort for some tasks such as moving furniture, equipment, etc. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and may push/pull/carry objects weighing over 60 lbs.• Must be able to perform physically demanding work with continuous standing and walking; frequent lifting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, and bending; repetitive motion of hands and arms and gripping with hands.• Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.• Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards.
