Associate Director of Underwriting

Steadily is an insurance technology company that specializes in rental property insurance for landlords. We’re Series B, just over 100 people, help insure over $20B in rental properties, and are intent on becoming the world’s best and largest insurer for landlords.

We exist to deliver fast, affordable insurance and to pay claims quickly and fairly. To do that, we hire the best engineers, actuaries, sales, and service people in the country to build the experience that we’d want if we were the client.

Steadily is hiring an Associate Underwriting Director who will be responsible for continuing to produce outstanding loss ratios and scaling a rapidly growing team. If you thrive on complexity and lofty goals, this is the role for you. This is an opportunity to bend the growth curve of your career. You will get exposure that could take decades at more established companies. Since we only hire the best, if selected, you'll get to work alongside other team members who are as sharp as you are which will just serve to make you even sharper.

What You'll Do

  • Produce excellent loss ratios through underwriting discipline, leading a high performing underwriting team, and a combination of novel and traditional underwriting practices.

  • Continue to build out workflows, processes, vendors, etc. for new business, underwriting, renewal underwriting, and accumulation management for a rapidly scaling organization.

  • Take a “roll up your sleeves” approach to leadership. You will be expected to handle front line underwriting work for a significant period of time until the team grows to a certain size. For at least the first six months, 50% of your job will be traditional Senior Underwriter work.

  • Manage highly organized underwriting files which will exceed the expectations of internal and external auditor scrutiny including necessary documentation, regular diary entries, etc.

  • Work closely with claims, product, actuarial, and customer service to ensure profitability and an overall excellent experience for customers.

  • Implement a robust QA process to ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, state mandated timelines, and contractual requirements

  • Hire and lead our growing underwriting staff who will drive underwriting excellence for years to come.

  • This position reports directly to the Chief Insurance Officer

Your Background

  • Experienced: You have at least 6 years of experience in property insurance underwriting and 2+ years of underwriting management experience. You are knowledgeable on peak perils such as hail, hurricane, wildfire, winter storm, earthquake, flood, etc.

  • Nice to have: Prior experience with Salesforce and/or CPCU.

  • Self-Driven: You thrive under intense pressure and can manage a large workload and projects with minimal oversight. There is no task too small or beneath you; “that’s not my job” is not in your mantra. You are resourceful and will run through walls to get stuff done.

  • Insurance: Extensive knowledge of standard underwriting practices, regulatory environment, policy language, vendor management, risk selection, loss drivers and much more. Bonus if you have experience standing up new underwriting tools and seeking out new vendors.

  • Leadership: You know how to scale and lead a high performing team. Your team members respect you for both how competent you are and how you never ask them to do anything you wouldn’t do yourself. You are a fanatic about cycle times, loss ratios, underwriting tools, and leveraging technology.

  • Project Management: You have above average project management skills. You’re great at moving the ball forward on multiple projects simultaneously. You know how to make workflows more efficient and enhance the user experience.

  • Hungry: You want to make the leap into an earlier-stage tech company to rapidly accelerate your growth. You want to roll up your sleeves and hustle – you are not looking for a traditional 9-5 job.
