Studio Manager

The Studio Manager plays an essential role in the success of Air & Space Forces Association’s and Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies’ events, including Air & Space Warfighters in Action, Aerospace Nation, and the Spacepower Forum series, among others. The studio manager ensures proper set up of the studio before each event, greets panelists and provides directions during the shoot, coordinates with studio staff during the event, and establishes and leads an after-action following each event. The Studio Manager is responsible for coordinating and deconflicting studio events across departments. The Studio Manager is capable of handling any of the roles in the studio, including camera operation, production, directing, light set up, and sound, but is not responsible for all those things at once. Rather, this individual leads a team effort to produce first-rate results for live, hybrid, and virtual events and productions. The Studio Manager works well with others, sees and makes opportunities, is constantly looking for ways to improve, and is comfortable taking charge when needed and hanging back if necessary. Must be fearless in providing direction to very senior staff members and panelists, organized and punctual, with a keen eye for detail. Must be a total team player.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Produce live, virtual and hybrid events (approximately 50 percent of effort):

  • Organize and lead a technical run through before each event.
  • Ensures the studio is appropriately set up ahead of the technical run-through and studio event, this includes loading scripts into the teleprompter, setting up lighting, loading slides, and framing the shot for each camera.
  • On the day of the event, the Studio Manager is responsible for greeting guests in the studio and directing them where to sit.
  • Directs videographers and instructs panelists and host(s) which cameras will be used for each shot and segment of the production.
  • Ensures headsets are fully charged allowing for communication between event coordinator, camera operator, producer, and others as needed
  • Establishes communications with producer, audio technician, event coordinator, camera operator(s), quality assurance personnel, etc., to troubleshoot during the event.
  • Selects a virtual quality assurance person to monitor the sound over Zoom from the audience perspective

Manage the studio (approximately 20 percent of effort):

  • Create a master calendar of studio events, including AFA, Mitchell Institute, Development, and other department needs.
  • Works with the social media manager and Video Editor to promote events before and after.
  • Manages general studio maintenance, including software updates.
  • Itemizes, categorizes, and tracks all equipment, including smaller cameras, HD/SD cards, headsets, etc.
  • Recommends studio updates when needed, including new equipment, stage set up, etc.
  • Oversees any moving of equipment and studio taping when needed
  • Establishes an after-action with pertinent parties after each event.
  • Takes notes of possible improvements and ensures they are implemented for the next event.

Create Video Content (approximately 20 percent of effort)

  • Edit event content for posting on Web and social media
  • Create original video content for digital distribution
  • Work with other departments, including editorial, membership, and more, to create compelling video of a variety of types

Other Duties as assigned (approximately 10 percent of effort)

  • Could include working on live and virtual events, both for external and internal purposes, helping with registration, contributing to social media, and other communications functions.


REQUIRED JOB
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or experience in video, visual communications or equivalent.

Department Core Competencies:

  • Competent video editor, skilled in Adobe Premier, familiar with video cameras, still DSLR cameras, lights, audio and all aspects of studio production.
  • Knowledge of military matters is preferred but not a requirement
  • Experience with live and studio events
  • Ability to collaborate and direct others.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works out of Air & Space Forces Association’s headquarters in Arlington, VA.
  • Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, subject to modification based on the needs of each program or site.
  • Operates in a professional office environment with travel to local offices, community partners, and events.
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Must be able to travel as needed.

Physical Demands:

  • The position requires sedentary work (sitting most of the time with no adverse environmental exposure) and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.


The position also includes the following physical requirements:

  • Movement. The employee must be comfortable moving equipment, lifting cameras, setting up sets, climbing ladders to adjust lights, and perform other functions as needed to execute productions.
  • The employee in this position needs to be able to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a copy machine and printer, cameras, teleprompters, etc. Must be able to carry and maneuver equipment in crowded spaces.
  • The employee is required to communicate and hold verbal conversations with others by means of the spoken word. Employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
