Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, with more than 3 million paid subscriptions to writers, podcasters, and video-makers on the platform.
As Editor, you will curate and write pieces for Substack's publications (On Substack and Substack Reads) that reflect and stoke demand for great culture; commission stories from Substack staffers and writers on topics relevant to Substack’s and writers’ interests; come up with story ideas for other writers to cover that Substack’s publication can feature; find articles and writers to amplify up through Substack’s various channels; and help us promote demand for great culture generally.
This position will report directly to the Head of Communications, and you’ll work closely with the Co-Founder and Chief Writing Officer.
Substack’s compensation package includes a market-competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $150,000-$160,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Core responsibilities:
- Write and edit Substack’s publications, including profile pieces, interviews, and trend features.
- Generate ideas, spot stories, and create editorial opportunities from scratch, in line with Substack’s editorial strategy and standards.
- Work closely with writers and creators to commission great work that showcases the breadth of the culture-making taking place on the platform.
- Manage the community on Substack’s own publications, On Substack and Substack Reads
- Work closely with cross-functional partners, including the Managing Editor and Social Media Producer to ensure coordination across our editorial team.
About You (Minimum Requirements):
- Strong creative mind, with an eye for spotting story opportunities and the ability to write a beautiful sentence.
- Willing to collaborate with any writer or creator on the platform regardless of their views
- Ambitious self-starter, open-minded, with a high sense of initiative.
- 8+ years of experience working in journalism or publishing. Experience working in a tech company is a plus!
- Passionate and smart about the internet.
- An excellent communicator, able to foster understanding and teamwork
- Located in New York City or the Bay Area (required)
