Sustainability Communications Intern

About the Department/Unit

  • The Office of Sustainability is responsible for implementing the university's sustainability plan by advancing and expanding sustainability initiatives across campus.

Summary/Objective

The Sustainability Communications Intern is a part-time, paid student intern hired to work on sustainability communications efforts. The intern will work with the office to develop a communications strategy, and work will include designing digital and print advertisements, social media messaging, and resources for various programs. The intern will support writing the office newsletter and marketing plans for events. The intern will learn about sustainability topics such as green buildings, zero waste, carbon neutrality, and energy efficiency, as well as strategies for sustainability advancement in higher education. As paid employees, unexcused absences are considered grounds for termination. This position begins in August and lasts the duration of the academic year with potential opportunity for continuation.

Work Environment

  • Student interns will work both at events around campus and in the office.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

  • The communications intern will work approximately 10 hours per week.

Salary Range

  • $17.50/hour.

Required Education and Experience

  • Current American University undergraduate student studying marketing, communications, graphic design or related fields.
  • Native proficiency in English.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Strong communications, PR, or marketing skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Canva, Mailchimp, and social media platforms.
  • Passion for social responsibility and environmental sustainability.
  • Demonstrated record of reliability.
  • A self-starter able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
  • An open mind and a willingness to express new ideas.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • In your cover letter, please describe 1) why you want to be the EcoRep Graduate Assistant, 2) why you think you would be a good candidate for this position, and 3) your greatest sustainability concern.
  • Please also submit a writing sample less than one page in length and an example of any graphic design experience, such as a poster, logo, or other design.
