Reporting to the Director of Sustainability, this role serves in the capacity of office development for the Office of Sustainability. This includes budget and financial management, leading the creation and development of sustainability related programs, student supervision and guidance, and various campus responsibilities as it pertains to sustainability issues. This role will also be responsible for on-campus partnership development and various committee meetings to ensure a strong sustainability presence throughout the facets of the campus. Works proactively to resolve potential sustainability issues presented by students, faculty and staff. Researches and applies for applicable grant opportunities. Authorized to plan special events on campus and in the community, create educational programming, and oversee development of marketing materials. This position will attend various professional development and sustainability related conferences. Strong presentation skills for trainings and workshops. Coordinator will be encouraged to acquire professional certifications, and attend and present at sustainability conferences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Sustainability Responsibilities:
- Collect, assess, and communicate sustainability-related data for internal and external reports (e.g., USD Climate Action Dashboard, AASHE STARS report, Office of Sustainability Annual Report, etc.), under the guidance of the Director
- Assist in USD’s Climate Action Plan development and implementation process
- Research sustainability-related grant opportunities to support programs and projects at USD
- Manage grant writing and submission
- Manage Coordinate sustainability-related correspondence with the USD community
- Respond to feedback, questions, and suggestions, as appropriate
- Oversee the Green Office and Green Events Certification Programs
- Coordinate sustainability education and training for USD Staff
- Present sustainability issues to various audiences, on and off campus
- Oversee Sustainability Office webpage revisions and monthly newsletter creation and distribution
Student Management:
- Responsible for recruiting student office workers for Fall and Spring semesters, as well as Summer break.
- Supervises student workers and oversee the duties and responsibilities of each position.
Program and Implementation:
- Partners with USD departments and campus organizations to develop and implement programs to increase recycling, reduce waste, expand and promote alternative transportation options and EV adoption, reduce campus water use, and develop community partnerships to promote sustainability initiatives throughout the surrounding community and the City of San Diego.
- A key goal will be to work with other departments and organizations on campus to implement programs for further outreach to the USD community in addition to developing community partners to create events to promote USD sustainability in San Diego and advance sustainable practices to the local community.
Other responsibilities include:
- Oversee events and advise on sustainability-related projects proposed by USD students.
- Promote accomplishments USD has achieved to create a more sustainable campus
- Create events in conjunction with local and national events/celebrations such as EarthDay,BiketoSchoolDay,move-in-outprograms, etc.
- Oversees Sustainability Office annual budget.
- Work with SANDAG to promote iCommute program and get USD community to utilize iCommute services
- Work with Human Resources to increase commuter benefit program participation
- Promote bike share program to students
- Work with Parking Services to develop and implement alternative transportation options
- Increase zero waste events and awareness
- Increase zero waste events and awareness
- Increase waste diversion percentage for campus through strategic waste and recycling plans, increasing zero waste events, and expand outreach around diversion
- Create resources for the USD community to access and implement zero waste programming and events
- Work with Dining Services and Residential Life to expand composting diversion program
- Work with Procurement to create and implement purchasing guidelines

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree (in Sustainability or related area preferred)
- One to two years of related experience
- Demonstrated skills in budget management, leadership and planning. Proven ability to effectively interface with a wide range of constituencies. Ability to supervise student workers.
- Familiarity with mission driven organizations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in various sustainability issues regarding programming, education, and supervision of projects and events
- Minimum three years’ administrative experience, including university administration, project management, supervision or related
- Demonstrated experience with website updating and online marketing
- Ability to manage multiple tasks at once
