Technical Assistance Consultant, Public Health Prevention

Overview:
AIR’s Youth, Family, and Community Development program area is seeking a Technical Assistance Consultant to provide capacity-building training and technical assistance (TTA) on a public health approach to prevention, with the goal of helping states, communities and workplaces stop critical health issues before they occur. Related projects aim to address the following topics and health issues, including but not limited to:
  • Interpersonal and community violence prevention
  • Suicide prevention
  • Mental health promotion
  • Addressing inequities in social determinants of health
  • Housing and economic stability
  • Trauma-informed care/approaches
  • Comprehensive safety in schools and in communities
  • Health promotion and disease prevention
  • Community engagement and cross-systems collaboration

The Technical Assistance Consultant will support the work of the Integrated Prevention Technical Assistance Center (IPTAC) and other projects pertaining to the topics listed above. IPTAC provides TTA to military personnel to build their capacity to prevent harmful behaviors—including sexual assault, harassment, retaliation, domestic abuse, child abuse, and suicide—using a public health approach. IPTAC is supported by an interagency agreement between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Defense (DoD).


This position has the flexibility to be fully remote from anywhere within the United States (U.S.) or from one of AIR's U.S. office locations.

Responsibilities:
The Technical Assistance Consultant hired to join the IPTAC team will serve as the primary point of contact to a specific military service (e.g., Air Force, Navy) providing TTA on a range of topics, either directly or through coordination with other AIR subject matter experts. TTA topics may include conducting needs assessments; selecting and implementing research-based programs, policies, and practices to address factors across the social ecology; developing comprehensive integrated prevention plans; and evaluating prevention activities. TTA modalities will include phone consultation, virtual group learning events (e.g., webinars), product development (e.g., templates, guides), and in-person training.

The responsibilities for the position include:
  • Plan and deliver TTA to clients and other stakeholders, including military personnel, informed by research and evidence. This includes setting timelines, managing tasks, tracking TTA provided, creating reports, and assuring quality per AIR’s policies and procedures.
  • Build capacity of clients and other stakeholders, including military personnel, to plan and implement comprehensive primary prevention strategies for multiple harmful behaviors through:
    • Providing individualized, one-on-one TA on primary prevention of harmful behaviors.
    • Delivering tailored trainings, virtual and/or in-person
    • Developing TA materials, including worksheets, checklists, resource sheets, and other resources to supplement TTA provided to recipients.
  • Contribute to team efforts to develop new business opportunities around public health approaches to violence prevention and suicide prevention, including strategic planning and writing sections of proposals.
  • Handle multiple tasks independently and simultaneously.
In addition to their role on IPTAC, this position will contribute to other TTA projects at AIR, including those with communities outside of the military.
Qualifications:

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • PhD; or Master’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of experience; or a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 6 years of experience in education, behavioral health, trauma, or other related fields.
  • Work or lived experience with military service members, veterans, or military families.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in areas related to implementing programs and policies to support a public health approach to violence prevention (e.g., sexual assault prevention, harassment, domestic abuse or child abuse) and/or suicide prevention or other related fields.
  • Experience developing interactive presentations and/or trainings.
  • Experience developing professional written materials, such as worksheets, checklists, or toolkits.
  • Experience providing direct capacity-building training, technical assistance and/or coaching support is strongly preferred, but not required.

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to ensure effective communication with individuals at all levels and from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to create timelines and track completed tasks in a timely manner.
  • Strong attention to detail with commitment to accuracy when writing.
  • Grant or contract writing skills.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. Employment-based visa sponsorship (including H-1B sponsorship) is not available for this position. Depending on project work, qualified candidates may need to meet certain residency requirements.

AIR’s Total Rewards Program, is designed to reward our staff competitively and motivate them to achieve our critical mission. This position offers an anticipated annual salary of $85,000 - $115,000. Salary offers are made based on internal equity within the institution and external equity with competitive markets. Please note this is the annual salary range for candidates that are based in the United States.
