Technical Product Manager, Site Reliability Engineering

Insider is hiring a Technical Product Manager to join our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Team. Our small but mighty SRE team is a crucial resource for our tech and product teams, our journalists, and the millions of people who read our stories around the world by providing secure and reliable infrastructure, actionable alerts, and transparent metrics to make sure our site runs smoothly.

Our mission is to inform and inspire the digital generation and become the most influential and loved journalism company. At Insider, we aim to cover the people, companies, and ideas changing our world. Our team members embody and uphold Insider's three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day.

The Role & Team:

As a Technical Product Manager on the SRE team, you will collaborate closely with every engineering team at Insider to listen to their needs and pain points and convert those into product requirements for the SRE team. You will gain a deep understanding of all of the systems under SRE's purview, and prioritize multiple work streams. You will communicate the impact of highly complex, technical projects to the rest of the organization to champion the work of your team. You'll partner with senior SREs and managers to take a high level vision and translate that into actionable work and tickets for individual contributors.

We're looking for someone who is passionate about the intersection between technology and product, loves to get in the weeds with engineers about what they're building, and who is looking to work in a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive environment.

This role reports directly to the Group Product Manager of SRE, Delivery, and Syndication and sits on the Site Reliability Engineering Team in Product & Technology. This role will be remote with the option to come into the NYC office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the technical leads on SRE to drive and ideate key product initiatives and strategies, such as developing maintenance plans for our critical services, working towards a "one-click" reproducible EKS cluster, and creating technology to empower developers from other teams to take on their own operations work

  • Craft thoughtful and data driven goals for your team, and identify Key Performance Indicators to measure progress

  • Partner with technical leads to break down large pieces of work into incremental deliverables for long-term, highly technical projects

  • Gather requirements for new initiatives from engineers and other stakeholders, and present those requirements to your team and stakeholders in the form of product briefs, user stories, or diagrams

  • Field requests from external teams and appropriately prioritize work against internal SRE work

  • Prioritize and refine a backlog of tickets

  • Lead a team of skilled engineers to deliver on sprint, quarterly, and yearly goals

  • Run daily stand ups, sprint planning, and consistently highlight your team's achievements to the wider organization

  • Manage personal workload to ensure timely delivery of products

  • Educate stakeholders and other teams on technical best practices

  • Proactively identify areas of improvement in both team processes and tech stack, and present them to the team for feedback

  • Frequently document and communicate the impact of the team's work to the larger organization

The Ideal Candidate Has:

  • Knowledge of SRE best practices and tools, like AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, Cloudformation, etc.

  • A passion for conducting industry research and advocating for technical best practices.

  • Familiarity with Github or other modern CI/CD systems (Jenkins, GitLab, etc.).

  • Ability to effectively communicate directly and across various time zones with other engineers, product managers, and directors.

  • Familiarity with monitoring platforms like Cloudwatch, Datadog, ELK, and New Relic, and the ability to sift through systems data and technical logs.

  • Excitement to test, build, and evangelize new technologies that solve problems for the SRE team and the wider organization.

  • Outside-the-box thinking and takes initiative in solving problems.

  • Excellence in time management and can juggle multiple priorities simultaneously.

  • A team player attitude who can maintain a high level of team morale.

  • Belief in the importance of journalism.

  • Nice to have: hands-on experience as a backend or site reliability engineer and can use that experience in a technical product management capacity.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary: $130,000 - $150,000 (dependent on skills, experience, and competencies)

  • Unlimited PTO, 10 paid holidays, and 16 weeks of parental leave

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans

  • Matched and vested 401k plan

  • Access to resources for financial planning guidance, family planning services, mental health reachout and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)

  • Additional benefits include commuter benefits, phone reimbursement, gym membership discounts, and more
