The Operations Strategic Capabilities Unit plays a fundamental role in enabling efficient business and program execution – from strategic capital investments, industrial operations and an efficient supply chain, to state-of-the-art manufacturing and test operations and top-notch facilities management.


Technician III / Technician IV – Paint Technician 2nd Shift


At the Ball Aerospace Manufacturing Center (AMC) location in Westminster, Colorado, we develop and manufacture state of the art tactical technologies including low profile antennas, electronic warfare platforms, and multispectral imaging systems. Technological developments are driving rapid expansion of our manufacturing capabilities to support customer demands. You will get to work with state-of-the-art military, space, and tactical equipment. The role is hands-on, technically challenging, and allows you to contribute to impactful projects with exciting missions. Working alongside highly skilled people including engineers and technicians where there is space to learn and grow. This position will support the Westminster paint work center in preparing hardware for various coatings. You’ll be an important and integral part of the team executing surface prep, masking, and unmasking the hardware.


What You’ll Do:


  • Spray hardware using a HVLP gun, in a paint booth, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and respirator.
  • Mix various paints for spray applications and touchups using specific ratios defined by manufacturer and/or Ball Aerospace specifications.
  • Work with solvents and chemicals using personal protective equipment, gloves, safety glasses and chemical apron. Must understand and comply with all safety and environmental regulations.
  • Position requires strong attention to detail and compliance to industry, environmental, health and safety standards.
  • Position requires ability (or willingness to learn) to read and interpret engineering drawings, diagrams, and illustrations to determine masking, painting, and curing requirements.
  • Position requires you to follow detailed instructions and follow them in the correct sequence to produce quality, repeatable painted hardware.
  • Handle, transport, and hang hardware with care. Hardware could be heavy, fragile, bendable, or otherwise breakable or can tear or rip. This work requires attention and care to work expediently but not recklessly.
  • Core duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Inspecting incoming hardware.
    • Surface preparation for painting operations including abrading and cleaning surfaces using various solvents.
    • Detailed masking utilizing paper, tape, rubber, and 3d printed materials.
    • Hanging delicate hardware on racks and carts.
    • Unmasking.
    • Final cleaning of parts.
    • Operation of paint equipment and ovens.
    • Mixing paint systems.
    • Reading and signing off on work instructions and submitting forms where necessary.
    • Submitting paint usage, mix ratios, cure times, and thickness readings.
    • Communicate, call, and email where needed to address anomalies, areas of confusion, and areas needing improvement.
  • Be an engaged team member helping to improve operations by offering suggestions.
  • Be open and receptive to feedback.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain nonbiased, effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


What You’ll Need:


  • Technician III – High School diploma or equivalent plus 4 years or more related experience or a related 2-year technical degree and 2 years or more related experience.
  • Technician IV – High School diploma or equivalent plus 6 years or more related experience or a related 2-year technical degree and 4 years or more related experience.
  • Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Bachelor’s or Master’s, may substitute for two years of related experience. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Must have masking and paint experience.
  • Must be able to pass in-house certifications including personal protective equipment, hazardous waste, hazard communication, crane, and cleanroom practices.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Windows operating system, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • Ability to learn and perform application of paint coatings.
  • Ability to perform work area maintenance activities including area organization, chemical handling, and chemical replenishment.
  • Previous experience working on delicate or critical hardware and in cleanrooms or clean benches is preferred.


On-Site Work Environment:
This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.

Please remember that regardless of the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and other states, possession and use continue to be illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act. This includes the use of some CBD products. A post-offer, pre-employment drug test is a condition of employment.
  • Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, cleanroom, or production floor.


A DoD Interim Secret clearance will be required to start work and required to be maintained to continue work. Higher level clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.

Compensation & Benefits:


  • HIRING SALARY RANGE FOR TECHNICIAN III:
    $24.52 - $33.89 per hour (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
  • HIRING SALARY RANGE FOR TECHNICIAN IV: $27.40 - $36.78 per hour (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
