Position Description

The Temporary Maintenance Laborers and Laborers play an important role in doing work that helps make Seattle a great place to live, work, and play.

The City of Seattle is establishing a pool of Laborers who will support city projects, initiatives amd department. Work includes a variety of locations both indoor and outdoor work areas in all types of weather involving the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of city properties and facilities.

The applicant pool that will result from this positing will be used to fill temporary assignments of varying lengths and at various City of Seattle Departments. Assignments are not guaranteed and the assignment length is based on performance and business need.

Job Responsibilities

Temporary Laborer - $25.58

  • Perform routine manual labor in a variety of indoor and outdoor work area in all types of weather involving construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of public utilities.
  • Use various types of hand and small power tools such as weed eater, hedge trimmer, chain saw, pole chain saw, plate compactor, jackhammer, and backpack blower.
  • Work is usually done under immediate direction of a lead worker, and guidelines are built into the nature of this routine work.
  • Specific guidelines and instructions exist for performing the work, and the tasks within each work area are clear-cut.
  • Maintain work records and reports detailing all happenings throughout shift including all actions taken.
  • Communicate with the public, co-workers and staff in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Comply with the City of Seattle Temporary Workplace Expectations and Guidelines.
Temporary Maintenance Laborer - $30.09
  • May lead the work of Laborer's and Utility Laborer's, as well as other subordinate positions; and the work performed calls for more initiative, independence and self-direction in carrying out recurring assignments.
  • The work is performed according to specific supervisory instruction or established procedures, and the employees often perform tasks independently.
  • May be required to drive big trucks.
  • May require working with concrete or asphalt.
  • Communicate with the public, co-workers and staff in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Comply with the City of Seattle Temporary Workplace Expectations and Guidelines.
Physical Job Demands / Work Environment:
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently required to lift objects up to 50 pounds. May occasionally be required to lift objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
  • May work in noisy, dusty environments with offensive odors
  • May occasionally require handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
  • Work may be performed in confined spaces and at heights up to 130 feet.
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • May be required to work with other City and County agencies doing homeless encampment clean up.

Qualifications

Laborer- Requires ability to perform general labor/manual work, good physical condition, and the ability to use hand and power tools as required.

Maintenance Laborer - Requires one year of experience performing general laboring/manual work involving the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of public facilities (Combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability)

Additional Information

All laborers are required to pass a physical examination prior to beginning work assignment.

Some assignment may require the following:
  • A background check of conviction and arrest records in compliance with Seattle's Fair Chance Employment Ordinance, SMC 14.17. Applicants will be provided an opportunity to explain or correct background information.
  • A current valid Flagger certification may be required.
  • A complete driver's abstract (a five-year driving record) may be requested.
Driving Abstract Information:

If you are selected to advance in this hiring process, you may be asked to obtain a complete 5-Year driving record from the Department of Licensing.
