About the Opportunity

This is an open position with Toledo Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.

Duties

Under general directive supervision, reads meters on customers’ premises, recording the reading on data collection devices and documents, covers a route on foot or with the use of a vehicle; resets and reseals meters; reports abnormal conditions; performs duties such as:

  • Accesses customers’ premises using the most direct route which will not cause damage to the customer’s premises, while maintaining good customer relations;

  • Reading meters on customers’ premises, recording on cards or data collection devices; checking meter numbers and addresses.

  • Checking present reading with the acceptable reading-range provided on reading card or data collection device; or verifying reading if reading-range is not provided.

  • Reading, resetting and resealing meters, as required; using demand seals, socket seals or other appropriate items;

  • Reporting any water heating timing device which is in need of resetting or resealing;

  • Recording on the reading card or data collection device the meter number and current reading in those cases where the meter has been changed; recording on blank card, in those cases when a regular reading card is not present, the following information: actual or approximate address, meter number, and current reading;

  • Travels on foot or with the use of a private car or Company car;

  • Reporting abnormal conditions observed or encountered per established Company procedure; recommending investigations for reasons such as: low or abnormal consumption, possible change of rate classification, damaged meter equipment or other Company equipment, evidence of un-metered energy, including the checking of potential lights in demand meters, difficult reading conditions at specified location, especially safety hazards;

  • Obtaining and using, as required, keys to customers’ premises from Company’s locker file; maintaining key rings for assigned routes, reporting to office any changes or discrepancies;

  • Relaying customer complaints to Supervisor for possible action;

  • Confirming the meter constant, as recorded on the reading card or data collection device for demand and KWH registration with the information recorded on the meter;

  • Maintaining and operating vehicles safely;

  • Instructing and training employees in the work;

  • Assisting employees of higher classification; and

  • Performing similar or less-skilled work.

Qualifications

Must meet the Company’s requirements as to general qualifications, in addition:

  • No previous experience is required:

  • Must be a high school graduate, or the equivalent;

  • Must be able to learn:

a. To read and record dial readings quickly and accurately;

b. The prescribed method of reading meters and the efficient manner of covering the route

assigned;

c. The correct method of resetting and resealing meters and water heater timing devices;

d. The proper wiring and piping for meter installations;

e. General rate classification and codes used in the work;

f. Street and road locations; and

g. The practices, principles of operation, and the proper application of equipment prescribed by

the Company for recording readings, safety, first aid, fire fighting and prevention;

  • Must have the necessary tact, judgment and pleasant manner required for customer and public contacts;

  • Must have a suitable and neat appearance; maintaining clothing, shoes and identification furnished by the Company;

  • Must be able to operate a car in accordance with Company safety regulations, have prescribed insurance coverage, and hold a valid driver’s license, and;

  • Must be able to treat the Company’s business as confidential

  • Must pass EEI Meter Reader test, which will be administered in Holland, OH at a later date.

EEI Testing

We administer selection tests for a variety of positions. The required tests have been developed by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), a trade association of investor-owned electric utility companies. We strongly encourage potential employees to review all information, including the sample test brochures, and to use the available practice tests before taking the actual tests. Practice tests provide sample questions and detailed discussions of the correct answers. It's important to take the practice test as you would the actual one, with similar intensity and concentration. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer.

Note: EEI website does not allow access to actual tests. Testing is held at various locations throughout our service territory based on where the job is located.
