Job summary

Working within a UK Accreditation Service (UKAS) compliant laboratory environment, the purpose of this role is to calibrate,

verify and adjust electronic test and measuring equipment to a given engineering specification. The role also requires traceability of the calibration using defined procedures and IT systems, and complies with legislative and organisational standards.

Electronic calibration includes:

  • Calibration of electronic measuring equipment from manual to a partial or fully automated method of calibration.
  • Measurement of frequencies from DC to 26.5GHz, power measurements from 0.001 to 1000Watts, low voltages to very high (dangerous to life) voltages, ageing rate, frequency response, harmonics, frequency/power, modulation, RF power, RF levels, return loss, phase angle, temperature, humidity etc.

The equipment to be calibrated includes avionic, navigation and communication equipment, for aircraft, land, and marine use. Plus medical monitoring equipment for military personal, temperature devices for military weapon systems, fibre optic power meters and sources.

Job description

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform Calibration verification & certification of electronic / electrical test and measuring equipment in accordance with the Approved Data
  • Completion of all relevant paperwork and updates to IT systems / databases both during after calibration activities
  • Management of own time and work load to ensure deliveries meet the required schedule
  • Assist colleagues/apprentices by sharing experience and knowledge
  • Work in accordance with the Maintenance Approved Organisation Scheme (MAOS) ensuring that the correct authorisations are held and kept current
  • Ensure work area cleanliness and tool control is maintained in accordance with DECA process and standards
  • Analyse and interpret test readings to make decisions on adherence to specification
  • Raise Technical Queries for problems with documentation or procedures. Suggest possible solutions. Design and/or building suggested calibration aids
  • Carry out repairs to electronic equipment as required and within capability
  • Assist with development of tasks, documentation, etc
  • Problem solving with different departments within DECA Sealand – Material Handling, Engineering, Test Equipment Controller, IT, Facilities
  • Undertake Routine Maintenance of DECA Electrical Equipment as required
  • Proof reading new or amended technical documents
  • Operating unsupervised as a Cat B stamp holder, with the associated legal liabilities, as stated within the MAOS authorisation procedures

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

  • GCSE Grade C / 4 or above in English, Maths and Physics or equivalent.
  • BTEC ONC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or completion of a recognised relevant Electrical and Electronic Engineering apprenticeship or similar accredited training
  • Undertaking calibration or test activity within an electronic / electrical calibration environment compliant to AS 9100 and / or ISO 17025

Desirable Criteria:

  • Demonstrable previous experience of:-

    • Working within a Team
    • Understanding of Risk Assessments, COSHH Assessments, Manual Handling and working within an environment compliant with all aspects of Health & Safety legislation
    • Understanding the concepts and calculations of calibration uncertainties
    • Working knowledge of IT systems (Word, Excel etc.)

Qualifications

1. GCSE Grade C / 4 or above in English, Maths and Physics or equivalent.
2. BTEC ONC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or completion of a recognised relevant Electrical and Electronic Engineering apprenticeship or similar accredited training.

If your application is successful, you will be invited to interview; the interview will last approximately 1 hour.

Interviews are planned for week commencing: 17 July 2023. A minimum of 5 full working days’ notice will be provided for interviews. We endeavour to stick to these dates, but these are subject to change around business needs.

All successful candidates who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period effective from the employment start date.
