The Ohio State University invites applications for the position of Communications Specialist on the Mansfield campus. This individual in this position is responsible for activating marketing and communications strategies for the Mansfield campus. Leveraging a deep understanding of the campus’ primary audiences, this individual will help develop and implement marketing and communications campaigns that align with business objectives. The selected candidate will position the Mansfield campus as a quality pathway to an Ohio State degree and a valuable community partner, while serving as a steward for the university’s brand.
This individual is directly responsible to ensure messaging and visual expression of the campus align with the university’s brand. The selected candidate will be a disciplined marketer with ability and experience in building and maintaining effective relationships on the Mansfield campus, with the Columbus campus, and with the community and external partners. They will serve as a resource in helping internal partners achieve their goals and priorities, while using a strategic and audience-centric lens to prioritize, manage and identify resources needed to implement projects quickly and effectively. This individual also actively manages the Mansfield campus marketing and communications budget.
In alignment with the campus’ marketing and communications strategy and plan, this individual identifies key messages, proof points and themes for prioritized audiences. This role also determines which channels will engage audiences and inspire choice and leads the day-to-day management of all channels, including, but not limited to, social media and the website. This individual also maintains a leadership role with regard to ensuring that the Mansfield campus’ website is regularly updated.
This individual partners with internal stakeholders and university partners to deliver relevant and compelling content (written and multimedia) in support of the campus’ enrollment efforts, advancement initiatives, external partner/community relations, faculty scholarship and internal communications.
They are also responsible for managing and implementing multi-channel campaigns to increase both enrollment and alumni, donor and community engagement. This individual develops and/or oversees the creation, production, and evaluations of impact for brochures, event materials, social media platforms, advertising, invitations and publications. This includes the ability to engage in cost/benefit analyses with regard to marketing efforts.
The individual is responsible for media relationships, including managing media inquiries, seeking out opportunities to expand media coverage, identifying internal experts, and coordinating interviews between media and Ohio State Mansfield representatives. The individual will proactively identify thought leadership opportunities and pitch stories and news coverage to appropriate partners and outlets, including University Communications and/or external media. This individual manages newsroom content system on website, including publication of internally generated news stories, collation and synthesis of external media, and promotion of faculty research publications.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team builder with proven ability to actively listen and develop strong partnerships on campus, across the university and within the region. They will be a proactive self-starter who is comfortable with managing and progressing multiple priorities and projects. The successful candidate for this position must be an adept self-editor and have the ability to provide copyediting and proofing consultation for campus partners.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• 3+ years of strategic marketing and communications experience, or the equivalent
• Demonstrated superior organizational, writing, and editing skills
• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to excellence in work
• Professional demeanor and ability to build collaborative working relationships
• Ability to think creatively and strategically, while being detail and deadline-oriented with project management from ideation through implementation
Preferred Qualifications
• Strong understanding of persuasive writing techniques
• Ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced work environment
• Experience on a small, collaborative team with limited resources to achieve team goals
• Experience in digital marketing, including responsibility for email, social media and web channels
• Agency experience, including management of agency and freelancer relationships
• Higher education experience is a plus
This position is located at the Mansfield campus in Mansfield, Ohio and the target hiring range is $45,900.00 - $60,300.00 annually.

Additional Information
The Ohio State University at Mansfield offered its first classes in 1958. The Mansfield campus sits on 640 acres and shares the campus with North Central State College. The campus is a thriving model for sustainability and environmental/natural resources experiential education and hands-on research. The campus has a 20-acre sugar bush used for maple syrup production; vernal pools, pine plantations, wetlands, and stream heads; and an ecolab collaboration with the School of Environment and Natural Resources. The two institutions have their own administrative leadership and governance structure, but partner through several shared services, including security, campus recreation, facilities, and several student events and programs.
Ohio State Mansfield currently enrolls 828 students who are taught and supported by 28 tenure track or tenured professors. The campus focuses on the success of a student academically (small class size; innovative instruction methods; undergraduate research opportunities; easy access to faculty and staff; new programs and facilities), but also the success of students as a person.
