JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title:Data Strategist

Department:Data Strategy

Reports To:Sr. Director, Baseball Product Development

Status:Full Time, Exempt

 

Primary Objective: 

Responsible for providing insights that maximize the club’s win totals, particularly via pre-game and in-game strategies.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Create innovative metrics to guide in-game strategy decisions, including, but not limited to, hitting approach, pitching tactics, defensive alignment, and substitutions.
  • Design succinct, impactful reports that allow staff to make snap decisions backed by objective evidence.
  • Construct internal platform for generating custom reports for both major and minor league contests.
  • Engineer and support data pipelines for pre-game preparations and post-game strategic debriefs.
  • Collaborate with the advance scouting team to generate series-by-series insights.
  • Educate staff across all levels of the organization about best-in-class strategy principles.
  • Contribute to player acquisition decisions in both formal & informal contexts.
  • Field ad hoc requests about internal metrics & processes.
  • Complete other projects as assigned.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, computer science, mathematics or any other STEM field related to data science preferred. Equivalent, relevant work will be considered in lieu of formal education on a case-by-case basis.

 

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Proficiency handling large datasets in R, SQL, Python, and/or comparable languages
  • Shiny application or other web development experience
  • Proclivity to think outside of the box in search of the next competitive advantage
  • Demonstrated capacity to define stakeholder needs and organize project visions
  • Working knowledge of baseball analytics, strategy, and trends
  • Experience building predictive models is a plus, but not required

Physical Activities and Working Conditions:

  • Public health permitting, this is role is Seattle-based and works out of T-Mobile Park. Remote opportunities may be available on a case-by-case basis.
  • Nights & weekends will sometimes be required.
  • As appropriate, travel to Spring Training, relevant conferences, and/or Mariners affiliated games.

 

The Mariners are committed to providing competitive pay, perks and benefits packages for our valued Team Members.   

The anticipated salary for this role is $75,000-$85,000 annually.  The Mariners also provide a robust and unique offering of perks and benefits including paid public transportation, concession and merchandise discounts, special access to baseball games and other public events, and a number of exclusive employee incentives.     

All perks are subject to eligibility requirements and availability and may be modified or amended from time to time.
