Who We Are

The Virginia Living Museum is a leader in natural living exhibits! Native Virginia mammals, marine life, reptiles, amphibians, birds, plants and planets are presented in natural ecosystems and honored for their ability to connect people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation. Accredited by both the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (living exhibits) and the American Alliance of Museums (non-live collections), the Museum’s high standards are its hallmark, as only fourteen institutions share this designation in the country. Community volunteers outnumber staff by approximately 7:1 for incredible mission delivery. The Museum is a 2015 Governor's Environmental Excellence Gold Award recipient, and a certified Virginia Green attraction dedicated to environmentally friendly practices and education.


General Statement of Duties

The part time Chief Financial Officer oversees all Museum financial activities. This position is responsible for maximizing the return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls and reporting systems. Ensures legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions. This position recognizes the capacity to achieve greater results by integrating skilled volunteers, and leveraging their diverse knowledge and skills. Reports directly to the Executive Director.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance with 5 or more years of experience in managing finance/accounting functions in a non-profit. 
  • Proven analytical abilities with strong understanding of financial systems and software.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience in managing staff personnel with tactful discernment and discretion. 
  • Able to communicate enthusiasm for the museum and its programs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maximize the Museum’s financial performance and revenue growth in accordance with the Museum Strategic Plan and in collaboration with Executive Director and Board guidance. 
  • Strategy: prepare long-range budget & financial planning. Oversee all financial functions, AP/AR, credit card processing, payroll.
  • Reporting: provide status of Museum’s financial condition by collecting, interpreting and reporting key data to Executive Director, Board of Trustees, and staff.
  • Controls: guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls, policies and procedures, protect assets.
  • Annual Audit: oversee and arrange annual audit, financial statements and IRS reporting.
  • Communication: provide clear and concise instruction and guidance to Board, staff, and volunteers. 
  • Train, develop and appraise staff & volunteers effectively (direct report is FT Staff Accountant). 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Ability to work occasional evenings/weekends.
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
  • Physical requirements include medium work, exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and move about on foot to accomplish tasks.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel and utilize repetitive motions.
  • Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, viewing a computer, and extensive reading.
