As part of our mission to maintain a strategic advantage, we are seeking an experienced Industrial or Mechanical Engineer specializing in prototyping to join our engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a hands-on approach, be detail-oriented, and capable of working in a fast-paced environment.
Job Summary: The Prototyping Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and fabricating prototype components and systems using advanced manufacturing processes. This role requires extensive experience with CNC machines, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and expertise in material selection and coatings. The Prototyping Engineer will collaborate closely with design and engineering teams to transform concepts into functional prototypes, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives set forth in the Vision/Traction Organizer (V/TO) and Scorecard metrics as defined by the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS).
Core Responsibilities- Convert conceptual designs into tangible prototypes using CNC machining, 3D printing, and other manufacturing technologies.
- Create and refine detailed technical drawings, schematics, and CAD models using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and other CAD/CAM software.
- Ensure that designs meet all specifications, requirements, and project timelines as outlined in the department’s Rocks and individual scorecard goals.
- Select appropriate materials based on the performance requirements, including strength, durability, weight, and cost.
- Apply advanced knowledge of coatings (e.g., thermal, chemical, and wear-resistant coatings) to enhance prototype performance.
- Document material and coating selections in accordance with company documentation protocols and maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of industry advancements.
- Program, set up, and operate CNC machines to produce high-precision components from a variety of materials.
- Optimize manufacturing processes, focusing on efficiency, quality, and reducing cycle times while maintaining adherence to set standards and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Develop machining processes and toolpaths, ensuring minimal waste and maximum accuracy.
- Conduct comprehensive testing and validation of prototypes, ensuring that they meet functional and durability requirements.
- Collect and analyze data from testing processes, providing feedback and recommendations for design improvements.
- Maintain thorough documentation of test results, aligning with weekly Scorecard updates.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, production, and quality assurance, to ensure prototypes meet all functional and design requirements.
- Participate in quarterly planning sessions, contributing to the development of departmental Rocks and providing technical expertise to support company priorities.
- Clearly communicate project progress, roadblocks, and solutions during Level 10 meetings.
- Implement lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies to identify areas for process improvement and increase efficiency.
- Proactively stay informed on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.
- Contribute to the company’s V/TO by suggesting innovations and driving initiatives that align with strategic priorities and core values.
Skills & Qualifications- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in prototyping, CNC machining, and engineering design.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and other design software.
- Hands-On Experience: Demonstrated experience with CNC programming, machine operation, and toolpath optimization.
- Knowledge of Materials & Coatings: Expertise in material properties and coating techniques for metals, polymers, and composite materials.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on overcoming challenges in the prototyping process.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Organizational Alignment: Familiarity with EOS principles such as the V/TO, Scorecard, and Rock setting, as well as participation in weekly Level 10 meetings.
