Agency Description

The First Judicial District of Pennsylvania (“FJD”) is the Philadelphia County Court System and is composed of two courts: the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court. The mission of the FJD is to adjudicate cases and provide services to the community within our jurisdiction while ensuring fair, timely, and accessible justice to the people of Philadelphia. The FJD is part of the Unified Judicial System reporting in to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court of Pennsylvania.


Job Description


An employee in this class announces the opening of court and performs various duties which facilitate the courtroom proceedings. The individual selected for this position may be assigned to either the Juvenile Branch or Domestic Relations Branch of Family Court, and may be reassigned to either Branch, as business needs might require.

Performs entry-level escort, announcement, and ceremonial work in a court of law for the purpose of ensuring courtroom decorum, compliance to courtroom procedures, and the facilitation of the overall functioning of the court during legal activities.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Prepares the courtroom prior to the beginning of proceedings.
  • Open court by reciting standard announcements.
  • Swears in witnesses.
  • Marks and records exhibits.
  • Provides limited courtroom security.
  • Checks bags and packages of persons entering courtroom.
  • Verifies that emergency phones are working.
  • Ensures that newspapers are kept out of the courtroom.
  • Assures the integrity of the proceedings.
  • Assures that all parties required for the proper conduct of the trial are present.
  • Maintains all necessary records as indicated by current courtroom procedures.
  • Carries out the orders of the Judge.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Answers the telephone or may greet callers.
  • Provides general information pertaining to assigned function.
  • Replenishes computer printer, copier or fax machine paper supplies.
  • Performs related work as required.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Standard courtroom conditions.

Direct contact with diverse court clientele.

PHYSICAL STRENGTH REQUIREMENTS

Ability to meet minimum physical and medical standards.

  • Ability to learn and apply, within a reasonable period of time, courtroom needs and techniques, procedures, rules and regulations relating to court proceedings and operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and oral directions
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the members of the judiciary, attorneys, associates, and the general public.

Work-Life

Working hours are 40 hours per week. This is a full-time, in person position with the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

OR

  • Equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the characteristics required to perform the essential functions of the class may substitute for those listed.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation.
  • City residency required within one year of employment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of a position in this class.
  • Covid-19 Vaccination is recommended.

Salary Range: $43,207 - $47,350
