Description

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology coordinates the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) research programs and is charged with advancing rigorous analysis and the deployment of cross-cutting technologies to improve our Nation's transportation system. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics is the Principal Federal Statistical Agency that provides objective, comprehensive, and relevant information on the extent and use of the Nation’s transportation system, how well the system performs, and the effects of the system on society and the environment.

Take an appointment with our team and learn how to analyze the impact of the transportation system. The research projects and developmental opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Department of Transportation. The first project is to research and compile information about travel demand models from the States and Metropolitan Planning Organization's to develop a white paper on current practices/methods from a national standpoint. We’re interested in basic model information for regional and statewide transportation models. The second project would be to do an assessment/collection of transit infrastructure that has been impacted climate change activities (flooding, extreme temperatures).

This fellowship offers a competitive stipend, travel allowance and eligible for Health Insurance benefits.

The appointment will be served within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics in Washington, DC as a Transportation Program Analysis Fellow.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (master's degree desired) in related field required (preferably in Geography, Social or Behavioral Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Math or Statistics, Earth or Geo Science, Life, Physical or Environmental Science, Engineering, Business, Data Science, Data Visualization).

  • Demonstrated experience in data visualization – (tableau, socrata at etc);
  • Demonstrated experience in GIS and spatial mapping
  • Demonstrated experience with R or Python;
  • Demonstrated experience linking various and transportation datasets;
  • Demonstrated experience with Travel Demand Modeling/Forecast;
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills;
  • A self-starter with the ability to perform work with limited supervision and changing outcome goals;
  • Knowledge of and interest in U.S. transportation systems; State DOT's and MPO's;
  • Experience presenting results in a clear, effective, and attractive manner to inform next steps;
  • Proficiency translating high level business requirements into detailed design specifications;
  • Ability to work across various offices and work units to obtain information, collaborate on data-related projects, and validate findings and conclusions;
  • Demonstrated experience on climate change mitigation and adaptation policy;
  • Demonstrated experience alternative energy, and transportation statutes.
