Lead Development Engineer (Onsite)

SUMMARY:  

This position assists in the development and deployment of detailed software and hardware solution integration specifications for major product labeling automation systems 

Responsibilities include providing work leadership, training, coaching, and direction for Team Members of the programming/developers, support staff, plant floor operators and maintenance crews (both internal and external).  Strong emphasis on detailed analysis, hardware solution design, programming and/or configuration issues, and providing expert level system support for issue escalations from the support team and plant Team Members. Project analysis, specification and coordination work will include the scope of material handling hardware and process design, fabrication, mechanical, electrical, software development, automation development, testing, training, implementation, and support.  This position requires exposure to and demonstrated proficiency in the areas of architecture, analysis, system hardware design, hardware-software integration design, software requirements, testing, debugging, implementation, and an understanding of PLC logic and OPC integration with software applications.  Estimation, budgeting, procurement, and monitoring project financials is required. 

Expectations include working with limited direct supervision in the maintenance of assigned systems and the development and installation of systems. Issues must be worked through in a timely and accurate fashion. 

Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:  

Act as liaison between several business units, architecture board, numerous IT departments, external suppliers, and contractors; 

Provide status reports where required; develop and review design specifications for software applications; 

Create and maintain documentation for code, configuration, user support, and user training while using the system life cycle and while supporting issues; 

Provide escalation on-call support and problem resolution;  

Work with end-user groups closely to assist with aligning information technology and hardware automation solutions with the department's business goals;  

Conduct feasibility studies to define the purpose, functions, and overall structure of business processes;  

Perform analysis and document business processes leading to development, process change and/or system implementation;  

Assist in developing system/application architecture; assist in developing software specifications in alignment with long-term roadmaps, aid in developing scope and requirements for IT projects for the business units that will include software as well as manufacturing equipment development and deployment in factories; aid in development and execution of project plans;  

 

REQUIREMENTS 

 

Education: Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems or other technical area. Equivalent work experience may be acceptable. 

Experience: 7+ years of experience in engineering, information technology, or related area with relevant experience.  Experience with production critical factory floor manufacturing IT systems is required.  Experience with Zebra and SATO label printers, Print & Apply labeling systems, PLC logic, SQL, data analysis skills, and electrical control systems is strongly preferred. 

Advanced computer skills: working knowledge of production-critical multi-user computer systems and factory floor hardware, in-depth knowledge of in-house authored and off-the-shelf applications, and experience with software interfaced with production machinery.  This position requires system configuration knowledge and scripting knowledge, so past programming experience is preferred. 

Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and above average written skills; experience communicating with external customers, subject matter experts, management, executive management, internal technicians, and system users; experience communicating technical information to non-technical team members is required. Developing good working relationships with business area Team Members is critical. 

Special Skills: Thorough understanding of business process design and experience with a System Lifecycle Methodology; experience developing, reviewing, and/or modifying specifications, configurations and/or programs to meet specified requirements; analyzing and interpreting information systems proposals, and evaluating and developing alternative implementation plans;  

Working productively on a team; ability to provide constructive feedback to other team members; ability to receive and learn from constructive feedback;  

Knowledge of current technology developments and trends;  

Extensive problem solving and root cause analysis skills; Experience developing and executing test plans; possess basic project coordinator / project management capabilities;  

Travel:  Travel is required for this position and may be extensive at times.  Amount of travel will be determined by individual project and on-site support requirements. Weekend/holiday work can be expected.
