JOB SUMMARY

The Office of Indigenous Education administers Indigenous graduate degree programs. It works in collaboration with three academic departments in the Faculty of Education (EDST, EDCP, LLED) to provide the M. Ed. in Indigenous Education degree and with EDST in the delivery of the Ts”kel EdD sub specialization.

The Ts”kel Program Manager works closely with the Ts”kel Academic Director to ensure the high-quality delivery of the Ts”kel EdD program and its students’ successful and timely completion of the program. The Ts”kel Program Manager manages  the curriculum development and program evaluation, and advises and guides students through admissions, coursework, establishing their research committees, dissertation writing, and graduation. The Ts”kel Program Manager is responsible for planning, developing and coordinating activities and events to support the delivery of the program including managing admissions, scheduling instructors for courses, organizing workshops, visiting scholars, comprehensive exams, and other program elements. The Ts”kel Program Manager facilitates the connections between the program and its students with the Faculty of Education, the University, and participating Indigenous communities, particularly supporting student – Indigenous community relations.

The above responsibilities require specialized knowledge and experience in Indigenous Education.

About the Ts’‘kel EdD Program:

The students in the Ts”kel EdD program are experienced Indigenous educators with leadership responsibilities for the resurgence of Indigenous ways of being and knowing in Indigenous communities, colleges and universities, business and health organizations, unions and community groups as well as the K-12 sector. Ts”kel students live and work in all areas of British Columbia, as well as in other provinces and countries. The program receives from 40 to 50 applications per intake. A typical Ts”kel cohort is composed of 15-22 students.

Most Ts”kel courses are offered online with synchronous sessions timetabled in accordance with student work/life schedules. Some courses are offered as hybrid courses in the summer. Most research projects involve the study of Indigenous leadership and resurgence practices. The program is grounded in the belief that it is important for participants to engage in Indigenous scholarly discourse about understanding, critiquing, and advancing Indigenous educational priorities.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

Reports to and works closely with the Ts”kel Academic Director (a tenure stream faculty member reporting to the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education). Supports the Ts”kel EdD Advisory Committee. Interacts regularly with the EDST Chair of the EMAC, Indigenous faculty, OIE faculty and staff, Ts”kel students, and EDST faculty and staff.

WORK PERFORMED

Curriculum Development & Program Delivery

  • In collaboration with the Academic Director and in consultation with the Ts’’kel Advisory Committee, develops innovative program curriculum and manages program delivery;
  • Works with faculty to develop new program modules in response to student needs;
  • Manages the design and delivery of the Summer intensive course(s), liaising and working respectfully and pro-actively with community members involved in the course development;
  • Provides pedagogical support for in-person, online, or hybrid courses;
  • Provides feedback and recommendations for, and implements re-designs or improvements of existing program components or its delivery to better meet educational learning outcomes;
  • Proactively and concurrently manages the scheduling and delivery of courses, based on ongoing evaluation of the EdD program;
  • Maintains proficiency with recent trends in EdD programs and Indigenous graduates teaching, learning, and research strategies and curriculum development nationally and internationally.

On-going Program and Student Support

  • Plans and manages initial and on-going yearly cohort orientation activities for students and instructors;
  • Plans and manages events for Ts”kel faculty involved in instruction and supervisory committee to meet on a regular basis;
  • Manages orientations for faculty and partners new to the Ts’‘kel and its Indigenous program goals and praxis approach;
  • Liaises with prospective and current faculty members outside Ts’‘kel who serve on research committees of Ts’‘kel students about the distinctive features of the program;
  • Advises Ts’’kel students on areas such as university resources, policies, awards and financial assistance, computer-aided research software programs;
  • Develops initiatives and organizes events to link Ts’’kel students with Indigenous faculty and students in the Faculty of Education and across the University, identifying synergies and collaborative opportunities;
  • Advises students in identifying and working with research supervisors, as needed;
  • Coordinates the delivery of comprehensive exams, which includes communicating with students and faculty;
  • Develops and organizes various educational activities in both face-to-face and virtual contexts as needed, to support students’ learning and create opportunities for research sharing, such as workshops, seminars, writing retreats, presentations, guest speakers, and etc.;
  • Coordinates with the SAGE program on Indigenous graduate student activities;
  • Develops and maintains an inventory of learning resources for students;
  • Advocates on behalf of students as needed;
  • Proactively identifies potential problems and issues with students needing the attention of the Academic Director or the Ts’‘kel faculty team,

Program Evaluation

  • Develops and implements effective program evaluation. This may include recommending a process, establishing the schedule, creating forms and templates, developing tracking tools, managing the progress, preparing reports, and following through on action items.
  • Designs and implements evaluation plans for specific course components or teaching and learning projects and activities, as required.
  • Prepares evaluation summary reports, and makes long-range recommendations for the Ts’‘kel program improvements
  • Supports the Program Evaluation Committee in developing evaluation frameworks and strategies.
  • Manages the evaluation processes, standards and best practices and implements changes as needed.

Marketing and Communication

  • Develops and implements a communications and marketing plan in support of recruitment and reputation building;
  • Prepares program-specific marketing and recruitment materials, publications, and news articles in various formats, ensuring they are appropriately tailored to targeted learners;
  • Assesses and determines appropriate platforms and channels for program promotion, and manages dissemination of marketing and recruitment materials to attract a diverse group of individuals for each incoming cohort;
  • Creates, or works with others to create, podcasts, blogs, and other social media to highlight the program and research conducted by students in the program as needed
  • Delivers information sessions for prospective students and responds to program inquiries;
  • Disseminates work at local, national and international conferences and collaborates with faculty and colleagues on publications;
  • May represent the Faculty of Education interests by serving on UBC committees or provincial, national and international organizations.

Performs other related duties as requested.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

The performance of the Ts’‘kel EdD Manager has a significant impact on the success of the Ts’‘kel program. Poor performance would result in Ts’‘kel students being less likely to connect with the Faculty, complete their research projects, or graduate. The incumbent keeps the Ts’‘kel Advisory, faculty team, Academic Director of Ts”kel informed through ongoing communication. Effective management of projects is necessary to timely complete and achieve project goals. The position must exercise considerable judgment and initiative in decision-making, including resolving issues not clearly covered by established guidelines. Errors in judgement or failure to work cooperatively will impact program development, reputation, and quality. Lack of tact, diplomacy, or sensitivity when dealing with program partners could potentially result in missed opportunities, damaged relationships, and loss of credibility for the Office of Indigenous Education, Educational Studies, and the Faculty of Education. Inadequate consultation and planning could adversely affect the viability of the program.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works independently against set objectives. Reports to and works closely with the Academic Director of Ts”kel. This position is granted broad latitude and autonomy in fulfilling the duties of the position as outlined above and is responsible for recommending and implementing policy in areas of responsibilities assigned.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

May supervise clerical staff and student assistants supporting the Ts’‘kel Program, as required.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or EdD in a related field is preferred.
  • Experience working in Indigenous education and in a post-secondary institution with an understanding of the academic University environment and of UBC policies and procedures.
  • Proven team and project management skills with ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure with fast-changing priorities, uncertainty or ambiguity.
  • Integrates Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing in their work.
  • Integrates equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and mutual regard as values in their work.
  • Demonstrated experience in educational programming.
  • Formal training in curriculum development and project management an asset.
  • Formal training in program evaluation an asset.
  • Capability to relate to and work with Indigenous students who are experienced educational leaders and policymakers in diverse fields of practice
  • Understanding of the requirements and norms of both Indigenous educational practitioners and Indigenous educational researchers
  • Expertise in a variety of Indigenous research traditions and methodologies
  • Ability to manage complex budgets and timelines
  • Strong organizational, planning, time-management, and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural abilities
  • Excellent oral and written communication in English
  • Experience and expertise in the creation of online academic resources is an asset
