The Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) program in the Office of the Provost at George Mason University seeks to hire an organized, energetic, self-motivated individual to work approximately 25 hours per week as an Undergraduate Academic Advisor.

About the Department:
George Mason University’s Bachelor of Applied Science Degree (BAS) is a unique program created specifically for students who have earned an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and seek to complete their Bachelor’s degree, with a specialized technology-rich concentration. Designed with the adult-learner in mind, but open to students of all ages, the BAS degree offers a flexible learning experience for students.

About the Position:
The program, located in the Office of the Provost, seeks an Undergraduate Academic Advisor and program assistant who will support the Program Director.

Responsibilities:
  • Communicating BAS degree requirements to current and prospective students;
  • Providing quality advising to undergraduate BAS students to help guide their course selections;
  • Educating students about university deadlines, policies, and procedures;
  • Helping students initiate academic actions (e.g., course substitutions, transfer credit inquiries, and evaluations);
  • Compiling and conveying information about available opportunities (e.g., internships, study abroad, research experiences, special programs);
  • Maintaining advising materials;
  • Participating in virtual events (e.g., orientation, recruitment activities);
  • Referring students with academic questions or issues to appropriate offices on campus;
  • Collaborating with BAS faculty and staff on program activities, events, and marketing materials; and
  • Assisting with updates to the BAS social media and website.


Required Qualifications:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Previous academic advising experience;
  • Demonstrated interest in academic advising and student support; and
  • Demonstrated interest in working with transfer students and contemporary students.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • General knowledge of curriculum at George Mason University;
  • Website design skills; experience using social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram); and
  • Experience with (or the ability to learn how to use) systems for academic advising (Banner, Degree Works, Navigate).
