The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) - Office of theController is currently seeking a Payroll ProcessingAssociate.Under general supervision, the Associate performs payroll andfinancial accounting system transactions, on line data processing,and coordination of activities within the institution or withseveral USM institutions' Payroll/Personnel Offices, SystemComputer Facility and Central Payroll Bureau.UMB offers a comprehensive benefits packagethat prioritizes wellness, work/life balance, and professionaldevelopment, along with additional exciting perks that employees cantake advantage of. This residencyrequirement also applies to those performing telework.The ideal candidate will personally connect with theAdministration and Finance Guiding Principles which closely mirrorUMB’s core values: Respect and Integrity, Well-Being andSustainability, Equity and Justice, and Innovation andDiscovery.PRIMARY DUTIES• Processes UMB's biweekly payroll adjustment entries and entersreason codes.• Runs queries to analyze data. Follows up on problems identifiedin exception queries.• Runs retroactive pay process and contact campus schools andunits to validate calculations for large amounts.• Enters offsetting entries for each negative retro pay onemployee’s payline.• Maintains control logs for data processing; i.e. bi-weeklytotals, form counts, etc.• Participates in training activities and departmental meetingsas needed.• Works with the campus schools and departments and other stateagencies to verify quarterly dual employment report & bi-weeklynew hires dual employment report ensuring that employees are notclaiming hours for multiple jobs during the same time period.• Distributes documentation to UMB and UMCP System Payroll.• Mails paper pay checks and contacts campus schools and units tovalidate addresses if an employee appears to have differentaddresses listed in home and check address fields of eUMB.• Images, indexes and stores payroll documents such as payrolland leave adjustment forms, journal entries, and foreign nationalemployee tax files each pay period.• Processes payroll journal entries.• Insert tax periods for new hires retro pay.• Validate final payroll reports before and after net payprocessing.• Works with campus schools and departments to resolve issueswith expired projects. Works with Sponsored Projects Accounting andCompliance, General Accounting and the schools or departments forappropriate action.• Sets up foreign national employees and non-employees Login IDin the required Glacier system. Follows up with departments ifemployees did not complete Glacier after the setup.Note: The intent of this list of primary duties is to provide arepresentative summary of the major duties and responsibilities ofthis job. Incumbents perform other related duties assigned.Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upondepartmental needs.Qualifications :MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:EDUCATION : High School Diploma or GED.EXPERIENCE : Four years of payroll experience, two years ofwhich must have included knowledge of State and Federal PayrollRegulations and the use of tax tables to determinedeductions.OTHER : Except for qualifications established by law,additional related experience and formal education in which one hasgained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for fullperformance of the work of the job class may be substituted for theeducation or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with30 college credits being equivalent to one year ofexperience.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:Thorough knowledge of complex and specialized payroll and dataprocessing procedures used in processing the University payroll, ofdata processing procedures used in processing transactions on thefinancial and accounting system; of on-line data processing andterminology; of federal and state tax laws; of state and Universityrules, regulations, forms and procedures affecting payrollprocessing, of procedures for payroll benefit deductions. Skill inthe use of tax tables to determine deductions; in the use of thecomputer terminal to update payroll data bases through batch andinteractive processing; in processing payroll exceptions andstreaming jobs to produce reports; in calculating net pay. Abilityto evaluate conformity with established procedures; to maintainbatch controls; to answer technical questions from USM staff; tocommunicate effectively both orally and in writing; to workharmoniously with others.Conditions of Employment: Employees in this job class may berequired to work overtime to meet required deadlines.Hiring Range : $54,500- $59,000 (commensurate with educationand experience).UMB is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
