DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz is a world-renowned leader in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Our scientists have designed new pathways for observational discovery from Earth and from space.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is to take the lead on the project management for two interconnected research projects related to growing food, community outreach, youth education via nature based projects, and water conservation via irrigation from rain barrels. Duties associate with this position will be to: interact with participating families and students, answer questions related to the program, develop educational materials, keep the program on track, help to collect data and organize the data, help with program assessment.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $26.12/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

Schedule Information:
  • Part-time, Variable
  • Percentage of Time: 75%, 30 Hours per Week
  • Days of the Week: Mon-Fri, with occasional nights/weekends
  • Shift Includes: Day, Evenings, Weekend

JOB DUTIES

40% - Program Participant Assistance
  • Works with participating families and students to grow gardens and install rain barrels.
  • Answers questions about the gardens and rain barrels.
  • Helps participating families and students build garden beds.
  • Acts as a mentor to student program participants.

20% - Event Organization
  • Assists with organization of program-related events like socials and meetings.

20% - Administration
  • Responds to requests and emails.
    Answers student questions related to the program.

10% - Hiring
  • Helps to hire students employees for the program using the student hiring system, Handshake.

10% - Material Development
  • Develops program-related educational materials.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and/or equivalent experience.
  • Thorough knowledge in administrative procedures and processes including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Good written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to actively listen.
  • Ability to think critically to solve problems.
  • Good time management skills and an ability to multi-task in order to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge about non potable water systems.
  • Experience mentoring students.
  • Experience working in sustainable design.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelors degree.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.
  • Per the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA), this position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter. The selected candidate will be required to report known or suspected child abuse or neglect as defined by CANRA and will be required to sign a Statement Acknowledging Requirement to Report Child Abuse prior to commencing employment.
