User and Outreach Lead

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Scientific Networking Division has an opening for a User and Outreach Lead to join the team.

Funded by the DOE Office of Science, and managed and operated by the ESnet team at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, ESnet is currently the fastest scientific data network in the world. ESnet links scientists at national laboratories, universities and other research institutions, enabling them to collaborate on some of the world's most important scientific challenges including energy, climate science, and the origins of the universe.

As lead for the User and Outreach team, you will coordinate, shape, and strengthen ESnet’s relationships, communications, and collaborations with our scientific research users and stakeholders (ie. research and educational network (REN) peers, DOE Office of Science program managers, and other public and private sector partners). Reporting directly to the ESnet Director, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining a vibrant ESnet science user group community, and for implementing a comprehensive outreach strategy to grow and strengthen this community.

This external outreach strategy will include effective communication of ESnet’s mission and associated value to this important audience; building mechanisms to gather feedback to ensure alignment with this community’s needs; and identifying metrics with which to measure success. You will also be a key part of ESnet’s internal cultural development efforts, helping to build community among ESnet staff through all-staff meetings, webinars, and newsletters.

User and Outreach Lead (or eventual team) activities will be performed in collaboration with, and in many instances in a supporting role for, ESnet’s Science Engagement team, responsible for the technical co-design we provide to science programs. Your User and Outreach efforts will bolster our relationships with our community partners, helping to ensure that specific technical network services and customer engagements can be more effectively provided by all other parts of the organization.

What You Will Do

  • Collaborating with relevant leaders and internal teams, develop an integrated user and outreach strategic plan for key stakeholders, including science users, senior DOE officials, and Berkeley Lab leadership, that advances ESnet’s mission as well as its technical and growth objectives. Strategic plan will include a proposed calendar of events, a budget, related communications campaigns, and metrics for success.

  • Identify and help execute a plan for an effective web presence for ESnet’s outreach activities, working with the Communications Lead, internal developer resources available within Berkeley Lab, and possibly contractors.

  • Create, support, and/or coordinate ESnet virtual and in-person outreach events, including Confab, ESnet’s user conference series launched in 2022.

  • Assist the Science Engagement team, and other ESnet teams (eg. Planning and Architecture, Network Operations, etc.) with production of ESnet’s annual Organizational Assessment Report, Office of Science Requirements Review Reports, ESnet Annual Reports, and other ESnet budgetary, reporting or planning submissions to DOE, Congress or other stakeholders.

  • Working with ESnet leadership and ESnet’s Communications Lead, create, write/edit, and disseminate user-focused communications and content of all types, such as brochures, newsletters, blog posts, videos, and presentations.

  • Identify opportunities to showcase the user facility expertise and achievements through a comprehensive speaker placement and award submissions program.

  • Represent ESnet confidently at events and meetings, including occasionally leading presentations.

  • Other duties as directed by the ESnet Director, necessary to support the organization’s mission.

  • Travel (up to 20% time) supporting outreach and in-person events with ESnet’s stakeholders located both domestically and internationally.

Requirements:

  • A BA/BS, ideally in a field of study requiring substantive written work and exposure to quantitative methods (statistics, calculus, data analysis), and some scientific courses.

  • 5-10 years professional experience in positions focused primarily on customer or stakeholder outreach and community building, that included developing and executing organization-wide outreach plans that advance strategic goals and deliver tangible, measurable results.

  • Experience overseeing memorable, effective, high-profile events, both virtual and in-person, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, managing teams, and execution.

  • Some experience with internal communications and culture building.

  • Ability to understand and communicate a highly technical organization's mission, operational priorities, and engineering/scientific capabilities.

  • Strong communication skills and a proven track record of using them to create outreach campaigns on behalf of an organization, ideally for the Research and Education sector or another science-focused institution.

  • Comfort with public speaking as a brand ambassador for an organization.

  • Proven ability to build relationships among diverse stakeholders in the service of a stated mission.

  • Knowledge of developing outreach strategies that include understanding potential customer needs and getting effective feedback.

  • Ability to manage external contractors to ensure they deliver services on time and within budget.

  • Ability to work well within a project management framework with specified scope, fixed deliverables and a set budget.

  • Fluency with modern professional collaboration and project-management tools, including but not limited to Google for Business, Slack, and Atlassian/Trello.

  • Prior experience with setting up and/or using a Customer Relationship Management database as part of outreach and community-building activities.

Desired background:

  • Experience at a DOE National Laboratory or Research and Education institution.

  • Demonstrated experience interacting and collaborating with the DOE, technology community and industry leaders and other senior level Federal/State/Local officials and their staff.

  • Prior experience in managing and leading teams.

  • Familiarity with multimedia and social media content production, scripting and graphic design.
