Auburn Veterinary Specialists – Gulf Shores seeks candidates for a Veterinary Assistant III position to perform various tasks related to the care and treatment of animal patients. This position assists in the monitoring and treatment of all patients admitted to the hospital.

Auburn Veterinary Specialists is the centerpiece of a 24,000-square-foot Auburn University Educational Complex in Gulf Shores, Alabama, providing specialty veterinary services and educational opportunities for students interested in internal medicine and surgery, and is a satellite of the Auburn University Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Essential Functions
Essential Functions:
  • Beginning treatments and admitting patients to IMC or ICU, ability to observe and record vital data, abnormal signs, body weight, and collect and labels specimens and perform treatments, administer medications as prescribed by primary veterinarian, record verbal patient history and communication and relay to appropriate staff


  • Recover patients from anesthetic procedures.

  • Performs, instructs, and demonstrates advanced veterinary care techniques and procedures related to critical care medicine.

  • Assists veterinarians in the care of patients requiring advanced procedures and life-saving techniques, including CPR. Knowledge of mechanical ventilator use preferred.

  • Inspects facilities, equipment, and supplies daily, as well as observes health status of animals, environmental conditions, temperature, and sanitation.

  • Perform job duties with speed and accuracy and work as essential personnel, providing care for patients that can include occasional after hours, on weekends and holidays.

  • Assist various departments with patient care and diagnostic procedures

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of experience.
Level III: High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience, including 2 years at the preceding level or equivalent.

Substitutions allowed for Education:
When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
