The Vice President, Digital Strategy is responsible for driving the online strategy for the Human Rights Campaign - who has a reach of more than 6 million followers and supporters. In this moment of crisis, this role is a critical leader in the Communications and Brand department with a powerful mandate - to dynamically, innovatively, and urgently show the breadth and depth of the support for the LGBTQ+ community.


You will get to spearhead some amazing campaigns and digital content strategies that HRC works on every year such as our Count Me In initiative, growing our grassroots army for transgender justice. You’ll play a leading role in mobilizing voters in state and presidential elections; engaging supporters in advocacy in the states and Washington; elevating HRC resources and programming; sharing inspirational moments from leading artists, lawmakers and advocates; and celebrating annual LGBTQ+ milestones like Transgender Day of Visibility, National Coming Out Day and Pride. And you’ll be a part of a team that led the campaign that turned the internet red and powerfully demonstrated the full breadth of support for marriage equality.

Position Summary:

The Vice President, Digital Communications & Strategy is responsible for shaping HRC messages on its owned and social platforms, including HRC’s social media platforms, homepage, blog and other digital vehicles. Primarily focused on increasing audience size and engagement across a range of digital platforms, they will be responsible for managing planned and responsive work related to HRC’s political and programmatic priorities. The VP will oversee a team of staff, freelancers and vendors to achieve strategic messaging goals via existing and emerging digital platforms.


This position manages multiple projects simultaneously, understands messaging and project priorities, and seeks to expand and deepen HRC’s influence leveraging digital platforms. The VP works collaboratively with other teams in the organization that drive digital engagement strategies for HRC members and that advise on the effectiveness of cross-platform digital content strategies.


Position Responsibilities

  • Drive the overall digital communications strategy for HRC, with an emphasis on quickly engaging in and mobilizing audiences around national dialogue, growing HRC’s network of supporters, and leveraging the power of digital to create political and cultural change.
  • Refine and define HRC’s organizational voice across all digital platforms.
  • Manage a team of digital communications and content specialists, leading the daily messaging operations of HRC’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok.
  • Launch national digital campaign efforts.
  • Build a robust content and creator strategy related to HRC digital platforms.
  • Ensure organization’s messaging is strongly and sharply delivered on HRC’s homepage, blog and through other digital vehicles, expanding into new tools and mediums strategically.
  • Understand the need for framing content in different ways across different platforms to ensure successful audience engagement and expansion across diverse communities.
  • Manage the Digital department’s budget and work collaboratively with SVP to develop future budgets.
  • Work with HRC staff members and outside vendors to keep HRC on the cutting edge of digital platforms.
  • Prepare proposals and negotiate and manage contracts with vendors.
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications team, Brand & Creative team and the HRC Membership Department to develop and measure campaign effectiveness across platforms.
  • Balance project scope, timelines and meeting deadlines, prioritizing tasks and communicating in a busy environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications:


Strong Political Acumen

  • This person must enjoy constantly following the news cycle and engaging HRC supporters and stakeholders via our digital platforms.
  • Desire to drive timely political and public education messaging to increase support for LGBTQ+ people through our digital strategies.
  • At least 10 years of experience working in a non-profit advocacy or campaign environment.

Track record of results as an experienced digital strategies, with keen understanding of leading current social media platforms.

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a demonstrated ability to work in rapid response environments.
  • Proven expertise with a company’s efforts on digital messaging strategy, rollout plans, and rapid response work for political, legislative, policy and programmatic priorities.

Strong People and Process Manager

  • Experience managing diverse teams with comfort giving feedback and developing early- to mid-career staff.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders, being calm under pressure, communicating effectively, and managing a diversity of opinions on each project.

Innovator and Risk Taker

  • Possess a willingness to take risks and innovate to reach new audiences and explore new platforms.
  • Ensure HRC’s digital campaigns are innovative, compelling, and represent the stories and histories of the organization to effectively position a "call to action" in rapidly evolving, highly politicized ecosystem.

Spirit of a Campaigner

  • Identify and employ innovative social tools and tactics to increase community engagement.
  • The ability to travel as required, approximately 25% including evenings and weekends.

All positions at the Human Rights Campaign may require travel on a regular basis or periodically. Where the need arises for business travel, appropriate compensation as outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act will apply.
