Global Merchant Network Services (GMNS) has relationships with millions of merchant businesses, in more than 25 countries, and delivers over $200B in spend. The people, processes, and technology that support this vital function are evolving to improve the merchant experience and economics. The Global Strategy & Capabilities (GS&C) team’s mission is to deliver a best-in-class premium merchant member experience that will get merchants to not only accept American Express, but openly welcome and recommend us to their customers.

The Global Policy & Standards team develops policy (rules), specifications, and data quality programs to govern American Express products and capabilities, to protect the brand, and to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements across Network Partners, Merchants, and Third-Party Providers.

The VP, Network Policy & Standards is an influential role that works across the American Express enterprise and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders and senior leaders to deliver Network policy, specifications, and data quality programs in support of strategic business goals.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Define What Winning Looks Like: Develop a vision and strategy to develop and optimize Network policies and standards to address a constantly evolving external payments landscape. Build a multi-year plan based on emerging payments innovation and business value assessment.
  • Drive Results: Lead all aspects of the end-to-end process to deliver policy and specifications including intake, prioritization, road-mapping, proposal development, governance approval, documentation updates, publishing, and socializing policy and standards for the American Express Global Network.
  • Build a Diverse and Inclusive Team: Cultivate a culture of inclusivity, empowerment, growth, and innovation for a global team of ~25 colleagues. Recognize and emphasize strengths, actively support individual development by providing timely positive and constructive behavioral feedback.
  • Make Collaboration Essential: Engage with internal customers globally to assess and understand their needs, socialize roadmaps, and share industry insights.
  • Lead with an External Perspective: Anticipate and proactively identify opportunities to keep American Express competitive based on new and innovative payment strategy in the global market. Adjusting quickly as the market evolves.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience and passion for the payments industry, understanding of global payments landscape including digital and emerging payment models.
  • Understanding of applicability and experience in working with Network operating rules/policies.
  • Success working in a large, highly-matrixed, global and sophisticated organization.
  • Comfort with solving ambiguous problems and constantly evolving needs, flexible, adaptable, and resilient.
  • Experience working within formal governance processes yet energized by driving continual improvement.
  • Courageous leadership, agile, transformative approach, excitement in questioning status quo, and innovative mind-set.
  • Skilled in collaboration with varied teams from Product to Legal to Technology, including listening to understand, analyzing inputs, building business cases, creating recommendations, and influencing for buy-in.
  • Industry leader with vision, active participant in broad payment industry forums a plus.
  • Strong, engaging communication skills and ability to effectively interact with executive leadership as well as key partners and global teams.
  • 10+ years in inspiring teams, leading by example, coaching, mentoring, developing successful teams, and creating a culture of curiosity.
  • 15+ years of experience in the payments industry preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, MBA a plus.

Salary Range: $185,000.00 to $260,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
