Job Description

Overview

The Growth Team is the engine that helps grow Leo Burnett’s client list, reputation, culture, portfolio and bottom line. It's a high-functioning, quick-thinking, tight-knit group of doers who move at the breakneck speed of new business to tell our story, solve problems and win pitches.

As VP Business Development Director, you're entrusted to lead a live new biz opportunity from beginning to end. This means managing the people and the content. You’ll vet the opportunity, craft the proposal, devise a plan to win and shepherd the pitch from kickoff to closing. You’ll have a lot of help from the growth team (as well as from the pitch team you helped cast), but you’re the glue who keeps the ball moving and the team together. You’re the first one to do background research on a new client, setting us up for smart recommendations and smarter content. You also make the trains run on time (and they're fast trains) by owning crucial operational intricacies like setting up timelines, tracking the budget and keeping the team in sync. You report directly to the Chief Marketing Officer. This means early line of sight on all agency growth initiatives with a chance to impact decisions and accelerate the process. You’ll occasionally be asked to help with PR initiatives or the company website. Or any other project that helps make the agency better. And you’ll rock them all, of course, given your great attitude and delightful sense of humor.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in fielding and vetting new prospect calls and emails.
  • Conduct background research on prospective clients and agency competitors.
  • Work with the Chief Marketing Officer to help determine winning strategy, team casting, and commercial approach for each prospect/pitch assigned.
  • Lead the work with each pitch team to develop and refine the pitch deck content, coordinate leave-behind materials and any unique presentation/meeting needs.
  • Assist editorial writer in creating and cataloguing new business content, such as helping to write and gather assets for case studies, agency reels and videos, RFI/RFP responses, etc.
  • Work closely with public relations/communications personnel to ensure the agency story and voice carries through all public materials.
  • Coordinate with presentation designers to ensure the proper look and feel is developed for the materials associated with each pitch.
  • Handle the operational intricacies and fast-moving nature of the process including setting up timelines, tracking the budget, communicating information to the team and managing the workflow.
  • Assist existing account teams with organic business development efforts as needed.
  • Track and report new business wins and losses.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Key Traits

Imagine you’re jamming with your new team in a medium-sized conference room for several hours. After those hours are through, you all still like each other a lot! And your new team members would rave about your:

  • Hustle. You thrive at speed.
  • Smarts. You diagnose and solve difficult problems.
  • Adaptability. You roll with the punches.
  • Humility. You don't seek praise, but you're quick to give it.
  • Teamsmanship. You're a team player through and through.
  • Leadership. You know how to take charge.
  • Versatility. You're part strategist, part account person, part project manager.
  • Dedication. You always find a way to get it done.
  • Polish: You’re comfortable working with the agency’s most senior personnel on high-profile work.
  • Storytelling: You see the big picture and craft every detail.

Qualifications

  • You've got at least 10 years of experience in the ad industry and at least 2 in business development.
  • You know how to use Keynote and Microsoft Office programs. (And Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, iMovie and Final Cut are major pluses).
  • You’ve got a Bachelor’s degree — ideally in marketing, communications, advertising or related field.
  • You're ready to roll up your sleeves and design beautiful solutions with some of the most driven people in the business.

Additional Information

All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.

Our founder once said, “what helps people helps business.” But too often, brands become irrelevant because they’re spamming people vs. solving problems. To matter, brands need to think beyond the confines of advertising to create solutions—not jus...
