VP of Engineering

About Caravelo

Caravelo is a travel-tech company with a global team and roots in Barcelona. We specialize in creating SaaS solutions for subscriptions, chatbots and tools that help airlines create a better customer experience and increase revenue.

Our team has been growing exponentially over the past few years and at the moment we are a team of 50 people working mostly from our HQ in Barcelona. If you’d like to be part of our growth journey, read on.

The mission

After two long years, the travel industry has recovered and is hungry for new solutions. That´s why we are growing and looking for a VP of Engineering to lead the team, who will help us move towards our goal: to build the leading subscription platform for the travel industry! ✈

The VP of Engineering is responsible for the implementation and vision of the Caravelo tech stack, and the leadership of the Tech organization. The VP pf Engineering drives and executes the delivery, engineering best practices, evangelization, and communication of the Tech org.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for proactively leading the expansion and development of the engineering team.
  • You will make decisions about the most suitable stack for a good scalability of the equipment and the product, participating in the definition of the architecture if necessary.
  • You will act as a bridge between business and technology, contributing ideas and inputs to the Product. Our Tech Leads will report directly to you, and you will be in charge of defining the “HOW” of everything we have on the roadmap.
  • You will participate in the definition of the strategy for attracting and retaining talent (selection processes, type of profiles, seniority level, career plans...), location of the team (remote vs. hybrid vs. office), you will design the culture of the Caravelo engineering team, and the associated processes, as a key member of its Leadership.
  • At a technical level, you will be the reference and the main support of the team in the following releases. We expect you to help speed up the process of building and evolving the platform.
  • You will “get your hands dirty” if necessary. Not only laying the cornerstones of the stack, but also emphasizing best practices for the development team.
  • You will have freedom and autonomy to make the decisions that you think are most appropriate based on the benefit of the business and evidence.

Required skills and experience

We are looking for a person who masters both the technical and management side, who is passionate about the startup world and participating in all phases of the product life cycle.
You will be a good fit if:

  • You have led engineering teams in similar roles. +3 years in management and leadership would be ideal.
  • With 2+ years in a fast-growing technology startup (either as manager or director) or working for a modern big-tech (e.g., Uber, Twilio). You have experienced first-hand the problems of rapid team expansion and have learned to ride the wave. This gives a lot of points.
  • You know how to attract, retain and grow the best talent. You've hired outstanding engineers in the past and helped them realize their full potential.
  • You are a great engineer who understands both technology and processes and has become a great manager of high-performance teams.
  • With 7+ years of experience in Software Development (with strong background in backend)
  • With an interest in hands-on coding -without fear of rolling up your sleeves and build the team at the same time
  • With solid knowledge in programming fundamentals.
  • You have lived through the ideation of a product and how it has been brought to life.
  • You have experience building and working with empowered product teams.
  • You have excellent communication and presentation skills, especially around complex and data-driven topics.
  • You feel comfortable leading meetings and giving presentations in English.

What we offer

  • Possibility to work full remote or with a Hybrid setup!
  • Flexible working hours and 23 days of paid holidays
  • Salary reviews every 6 months
  • Inclusive work environment
  • Plenty of space for personal and professional development
