The Director and Senior Counsel, Data Ventures, will act as the lead lawyer for the Data Ventures business of Walmart. Data Ventures is focused on productizing Walmart’s rich data assets to better serve customers and provide data products that deliver actionable, customer-centric insights to help merchants and brands make better business decisions.

This role will directly support DV leadership, handle legal strategy, escalations, new product review/support, as well as transactional work related to the products and offerings of Data Ventures. In addition to supporting Data Ventures, this role will create strategic data protection standards for the larger department (i.e. leading a center of excellence that standardizes the contracting and onboarding of third parties who receive certain types of commercial data).

This role reports directly into the Vice President and Chief Counsel, Walmart US Growth, who is responsible for overseeing the legal teams supporting Data Ventures, Walmart Connect, Walmart+, Marketing, and Customer Data and Identity.

What you'll do...

  • Manage legal strategy and support for Data Ventures, including the direct support of Data Ventures leadership.  

  • Use your negotiation skills to advise on, review, draft, and negotiate agreements in support of new and existing products.

  • Provide product counseling related to any new data/tech products and services to be launched by the business.

  • Be the trusted advisor who responds promptly to complex legal requests, coordinating with the team and outside counsel to deliver practical, timely, and high-quality advice.

  • Use your problem-solving skills to identify and assess business and legal risks, finding innovative ways to mitigate them while achieving product and transactional goals.

  • Build strong relationships to facilitate a coordinated team approach to launching new products and features and manage legal risk.

What you’ll bring:

  • A minimum of 7+ years, ideally with data commercialization, data insights and/or technology experience.

  • Have experience managing a team of lawyers, and/or acting as the lead attorney for a business.

  • Have product counseling experience within the tech/data field. 

  • Significant experience drafting and negotiating SaaS, data analytics, licensing and other tech and data related agreements.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work practically and quickly to evaluate risk, solve problems, and make decisions that balance risk, opportunity, and business objectives.

  • Develop and leverage internal partnerships across global governance, the business and other functions to maximize the achievement of business goals.

Live Better U is a Walmart-paid education benefit program for full-time and part-time associates in Walmart and Sam's Club facilities. Programs range from high school completion to bachelor's degrees, including English Language Learning and short-form certificates. Tuition, books, and fees are completely paid for by Walmart.
