The School of Data Science (SDS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a data scientist to work in collaboration with Don Brown, PhD and Neal Magee, PhD, focusing on UVA’s Research Data Enclave (RDE), a visionary initiative that will be designed to serve as the catalyst for unprecedented strides in collaborative research, translational science, and data sharing. Building on the success of the integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV - https://www.ithriv.org/), the Research Data Commons (https://www.ithriv.org/ithriv-research-data-commons the RDE will support a much-needed expansion of the University’s research data resources – allowing researchers to support team science and accelerate scientific innovation across Grounds. The data scientist will work initially with preliminary users and in later years with new users to specify and help define solutions for the data science research needs of the RDE users. This is a staff-level appointment dependent upon grant funding; however, appointment may be renewed for additional years contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.Data Scientists provide sophisticated data management and analysis to support University projects or programs. They focus primarily on high-level data projections and machine learning analysis. They manage the design and programming of all data entry forms and the training and supervision of project research coders, student workers, and volunteers. They oversee regular assessments of reliability, submit data on a monthly basis, and assist with literature searches pertinent to various research project topics.The successful candidate will:• Demonstrate expertise in troubleshooting problems and recommending solutions.• Have a strong ability to work independently and function well as part of a team.• Work in a professional manner and have a strong willingness to learn and improve.• Promote a culture of excellence by supporting others and generating new ideas to drive the project forward.• Act as a champion for the project’s research at local, regional, and national conferences.• Understand all phases of the analytic process including data collection, preparation, modeling, evaluation, and deployment.• Explore and examine data from multiple disparate sources in order to identify, analyze, and report trends in the data.• Establish links across existing data sources and find new interesting data correlations.• Have experience in AI/ML modeling approaches such as: transformer models, deep learning neural networks, and explainable AI.• In addition, other duties may be assigned.Qualifications:• Master’s Degree and at least 3 years of relevant experience.
