Wildlife Conservation Interns

Three Interns will participate as part of the Wildlife Field Crew to inventory and monitor various avian wildlife species including northern spotted owl, barred owl, and northern goshawk during day and night; conduct follow up visits to night time owl responses and bald eagle nest checks; survey for selected mollusk species; record data on field form and take accurate notes in field notebook; use GPS and map and compass to navigate in a remote forested setting.

We are hoping to offer interns other opportunites to participate in wildlife field work such as mist netting/bird banding, Swainson's hawk surveys/banding, and river cleanup.

Please be prepared to handle working in all weather conditions and strenuous hiking. Good physical fitness is required. Be sure to bring a heavy coat, 6 inch hiking boots, hat, gloves. You may be asked to survey for snails in the rain, or hike in the snow. Owl surveys occur at night. Cell phone use and ipod/headphones use is not allowed during surveys but fine at other times.

The Forest Service will provide housing in the small community of Mt Hebron, just minutes from the main District Office. Intern will most likely be required to share a room with another person in a bunkhouse situation. Interns sometimes share the bunkhouse with up to 6-8 others. Interns should bring their own bedding and pillows or sleeping bag. There is internet service at the bunkhouses. Most cell phones do not work at the barracks but do work within walking distance. There are apps available on Google Play Store that transmit text messages and phone calls over wireless internet.
