The Church & Community Engagement Manager leads World Relief Durham’s efforts to increase and maintain the support of local churches, volunteers, and donors. This position would lead the Church & Community Engagement (CCE) department in educating church and other community partners about the mission and work of World Relief, communicating the impact of community support to donors and constituents, and growing that impact through communications, events, public speaking, community development, and more. This position is responsible for ensuring World Relief Durham meets its annual fundraising and church/volunteer engagement goals. The position is full time, 40 hours per week, and assumes a role on World Relief Durham’s leadership team.   


Role & Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in creating and executing an annual Church & Community Engagement (CCE) strategic plan to accomplish WRD church mobilization, fundraising, communications, and program development goals.   
  • Supervise applicable development, volunteer engagement, donations, and advocacy staff toward the achievement of WRD's annual CCE goals.   
  • Engage in regular meetings with Executive Director and Development staff to review fundraising goals and clearly establish accountabilities for shared fundraising activities (including prospecting, grant writing, digital communications, print media, and more) and events.   
  • Develop, in conversation with the Executive Director, quarterly and annual work plans and metrics for the team to measure church partnerships, volunteer engagement, advocacy, fundraising, and overall CCE success.   
  • Track and update in Dynamics quarterly CCE goals and metrics; track and enter in Dynamics event participation by Executive Director and non-CCE staff; ensure that CCE events are entered in
  • Dynamics monthly and quarterly; ensure that in-kind goods and services (IKGS) data are entered and approved in Dynamics monthly and quarterly; and provide backup to advocacy staff for meeting and tracking metrics.   
  • Provide regular equipping resources and trainings for all WRD staff as they engage with their own congregations and communities about the work of Word Relief.   
  • Participate consistently in Church Mobilization and CCE Leads Communities of Practice to learn from and engage with peers across World Relief’s U.S. network.
  • Participate in other relevant meetings, trainings, and events for CCE staff across the U.S. network.   
  • Provide prayerful spiritual leadership for the CCE team     
  • External   Understand and communicate the mission and vision of World Relief to a wide range of church, business, governmental, and individual constituencies to reach or exceed annual engagement and fundraising goals.    
  • Build and regularly maintain WRD’s community engagement networks through personal relationships, public speaking, and delegation to department staff.
  • As needed, represent WRD in local church, business, and other associations to develop networks for generating community engagement and fundraising leads.   
  • Facilitate church engagement relationships by serving as the primary point of contact or delegating primary ownership of each relationship to other department staff depending on the church’s primary area(s) of interest (volunteer engagement, advocacy, giving).
  • Ensure consistent and transparent information-sharing and record-keeping across the department to appropriately and proactively manage church relationships.   
  • Assist in donor engagement as needed in conversation with development staff.   
  • As needed, assist the Executive Director in the formation and maintenance of advisory councils or other groups strategic to accomplishing mission and garnering financial and relational support.    
  • Organize and/or support community engagement events that increase WRD’s visibility in the community.    
  • As needed, serve as backup to department functions held by other staff.   
  • As directed by the Executive Director, collaborate with Director of Strategic Partnerships and other corporate or regional level World Relief staff on projects, grants, and events that benefit all parties included.    
  • Equip, educate, and encourage church partners on best practices in serving immigrants through resource creation, teaching, public speaking, and other methods.     
  • Maintain up-to-date church information and records of church engagement activity in Dynamics and maintain meeting notes in SharePoint.   
  • Execute communications plan in collaboration with development staff through regular social media posts, monthly newsletter, maintaining WRD website, annual report, blog posts, and stories of impact​.   
  • As needed, facilitate external partnership agreements in consultation with the Executive Director, World Relief’s legal counsel, and program managers.    


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required;
  • MDiv or additional relevant education preferred.   
  • Minimum of 4 years of full time management experience or equivalent   
  • Minimum 2 year full time congregational ministry experience or similar   
  • Ability to provide leadership, problem solve, create and implement new programs   
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics CRM preferred   
  • Strong writing and public speaking skills   
  • Ability to work on a team; ability to work independently   
  • Ability to handle dozens of church & community partnerships in concert   
  • Familiarity with refugee resettlement in the U.S. preferred   
  • Immigrant background candidates strongly encouraged to apply

  • Ability to clearly share World Relief’s vision, mission, and values in theologically astute and culturally sensitive ways across Christian denominations and in secular or interfaith contexts   
  • Strong administration and organizational skills   
  • Willingness to work on nights and weekends as needed for events   
  • Valid Driver’s license and regular access to personal vehicle
