Department Statement:
The Writing and Speaking Center (WSC) at Colgate University invites applications for a Writing and Speaking Center Coordinator for academic year 2023-24. This is a non-renewable position beginning immediately upon hire and ending June 30, 2024. The WSC seeks a dynamic colleague prepared to uphold and contribute to the mission and values of the Writing and Speaking Center as it seeks to support WSC peer consultants and WSC student clients, as well as foster lively and robust writing and speaking cultures on campus.

Accountabilities:
  • Collaborate with and support the Interim Director of the Writing and Speaking Center (I-DWSC) in conducting all-staff orientations, community programming, and hiring, including yearly retreats and DEI training.
  • Provide support for operations of the WSC, including day-to-day management; peer consultant scheduling, mentoring, and work assignments; review of peer consultant payroll submissions; website updates; ordering and purchasing; publicizing and promoting the services and resources of the WSC; and managing projects.
  • Under the supervision of the I-DWSC, assist in implementing a comprehensive peer tutoring training program for both the Writing Center and the Speaking Center and assist in structured support for multilingual speakers of English.
  • Offer a minimum of 6 hours per week of one-on-one consulting with student clients in writing and/or speaking.
  • Liaise with staff, faculty, and appropriate offices to advocate for high-impact practices of student writing and speaking across all disciplines and within diverse populations of learners; prepare and deliver workshops.
  • Where appropriate, initiate, co-design, and co-implement initiatives with interested programs or offices across campus (such as Office of International Student Services, FIRST@Colgate, etc).
  • Support and collaborate with the Director of University Writing, the Interim Director of the Writing and Speaking Center, Professional Writing Tutors, and all WSC student staff to collectively serve and support all of Colgate's undergraduate community; collaborate in WSC policy review and assessment of WSC service and support.



Professional Experience/Qualifications
Experience tutoring or consulting in a college writing and/or speaking center or equivalent teaching experience required; multilingual expertise or tutor training experience preferred. Demonstrable understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse backgrounds, identities, and learning needs of students required.
Preferred Qualifications

Education
A Bachelors degree is required.

A Masters degree is preferred.

Other Information
Due to the scope of responsibilities, Colgate alumni are preferred. Other qualifying applications will be considered.
