Youth Program Assistant - Urban Family Center

Job Overview:

  • Location: Fully onsite in the Lower East Side
  • Schedule: 25 hours per week with flexibility for occasional late evening, weekend work for pre-scheduled events and additional weekly hours for training.
    • September through June - 5 shifts per week
      • Monday to Friday from 2:30pm to 7:30pm
    • July and August - 3 shifts per week
      • Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm
  • Pay: $22 an hour; non-exempt

Job Summary:

As the youth program assistant, you will be an integral part of the youth program at our largest family shelter, Urban Family Center (UFC). Reporting to the youth program supervisor, you will be responsible for providing safe and supportive programming for youth ages 5-24 who are residing in UFC and attending the after-school and/or summer camp at Henry Street Settlement’s Boys and Girls Republic (BGR). You will have opportunities to create and implement a variety of programming including academic support, recreational activities, and curriculum development.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 1-3 years of prior experience working with at-risk youth in a recreational/after-school setting
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have good interpersonal skills, judgment, and problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrated computer knowledge of Excel and Word
  • Demonstrated skill and patience for assisting students
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and remain calm in high emotion situations

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans for after-school programming at BGR and recreational activities at UFC
  • Lead recreational and summer camp activities with the support of the Youth Program Supervisor
  • Escort youth on trips and special programs; accompany students to creative arts programs, computer lab, and other special events
  • Maintain written and electronic records: document incidents, accidents, daily attendance, complete group summaries, and statistical data
  • Develop and implement curriculums, lesson plans for recreational and educational group activities
  • Monitor and track students’ behavior; provide socioemotional and behavioral support as needed
  • Assist with the development and implementation of monthly activity calendars
  • Provide additional supervision of children based on the needs of the program
  • Assist with organization and management of clothing donations, pantry, and other programmatic needs
  • Facilitate evening and weekend recreational group activities (as needed)
  • Work at BGR during the school year providing support to after-school activities, do student pick-up at schools in the neighborhood, lead groups and activities at BGR in the afternoon - in collaboration with other BGR staff - and escort UFC participants back to UFC at the end of each day
  • Work full-time at BGR during summer camp
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor
