Experienced Routesetter

ROUTESETTER

BP Routesetters are responsible for bringing BP’s vision for a best-in-class climbing product and experience to life each and every day. BP Routesetters are responsible for bringing an unparalleled level of quality, creativity, professionalism, teamwork, and craftsmanship to the work they perform. The makings of an incredible climbing experience begins with the BP Routesetter.


We are seeking a full-time Routesetter (4-days a week: M, T, W, TH) to work at our Somerville gym location. Additional hours available with different departments.

EXPECTATIONS

Product and Experience Design:

- Represent and live BP’s values: designing with these in mind and performing whatever task necessary to create an experience in line with these values

- Bring BP’s Climbing Experience Guiding Principles to life and live BP’s People Guiding Principles each and every day

- Create an unparalleled climbing experience by working to bring BP’s circuits to life in a way that best exemplifies their benefits while being an advocate for BP’s circuit system and celebrating it in all work performed

- Maintain an excellent relationship with the Head Routesetter, setting team members, local staff, and local leadership: providing feedback and taking direction when necessary

- Work to create and maintain a climbing product that meets the standards and expectations of the Head Routesetter

- Maintain high standards for a clean, professional product

- Spend adequate time interacting with the local community in order to gather feedback and assess the impact of the work being performed.


Training and Development:

- Seek personal development and progression through BP’s System

- Conduct yourself and encourage a culture that best represents the expectations of the BP Routesetting department, BP’s values, and local leadership.

- Maintain the highest possible standards or risk management and be in constant pursuit of ways to mitigate risk

- Collaborate with other gym staff to help meet the needs of other departments and the gym as a whole

- Maintain availability and desire to assist with BP’s other local departments and events

- Provide critical and constructive feedback to the Head Routesetter regarding product, experience, job satisfaction, morale, and workload


Community:

- Routesetters will involve themselves in every aspect of the gym and the community in an effort to better connect everyone with the BP climbing product.

- Assist in creating and driving events in the gym that serve to better connect our product with our communities

- Be an example of what it means to be a community leader for BP staff


Facilities:

- Work closely with other gym staff to balance space needs and equipment/resource use

- Maintain organized, clean, and efficient back-stock systems

- Ensure that all holds and equipment remain clean, functioning, and of high quality.

- Maintain the cleanliness and professionalism of all climbing spaces including, but not limited to, climbing walls, training boards, and training spaces.

- Aid in the maintenance of bouldering padding and instructional spaces


QUALIFICATIONS

- At least 4 years climbing experience

- At least 2 years of setting experience in a commercial gym environment

- Ability to climb V6 in many styles comfortably

- Team work, communication skills, and the ability to receive and implement feedback gracefully

- Passion for climbing and community

- Desire to continually work to improve own climbing and setting skills

- Ability to move 50lbs on soft flooring

- Ability to work on ladders and at heights

- Demonstrated ability to work well with a team

- Good communication skills and the ability to provide, receive and implement feedback

- Passion for climbing and community development

- Desire to continually work to improve own climbing, setting, and interpersonal skills


WORKING CONDITIONS

Though the route setting will be performed on a regular basis, many duties require an ability to be flexible in working hours: Weekday, weekends, mornings, and nights may be required. Total workweek hours are variable depending on the position available.
