Common Sense is a nonprofit organization that gives kids, families, and schools the tools to make informed choices about media and technology. Families know us for our independent, age-based reviews of movies, TV shows, books, games, podcasts, and apps. Educators use our free curriculum and edtech reviews to plan lessons and integrate technology into their teaching practice. At our core, we are a children's advocacy group. We draw on original research, industry expertise, and community partnerships to advocate for laws and policies that help kids thrive.

SCOPE

The Data Analytics & Insights Intern will analyze data and generate insights to support decision-making across product and key stakeholder groups such as marketing and business development. This internship is ideal for someone who enjoys working with data, uncovering trends, and translating numbers into meaningful stories.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Data Collection & PreparationGather and clean data from multiple sources, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Use SQL to query and transform large datasets for analysis.
  • Organize and document data sources to improve accessibility and reproducibility.
  • Data Analysis & Insights GenerationAnalyze user data across multiple platforms to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement.
  • Support cross-functional teams with data-driven decision-making.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis (EDA) to uncover hidden patterns and correlations.
  • Reporting & VisualizationDevelop dashboards and reports using Tableau, Looker, or Google Data Studio.
  • Present insights through clear and compelling data visualizations.
  • Automate reporting processes to streamline access to key metrics.
  • Experimentation & Performance MeasurementAssist in A/B testing efforts and other experimentation methods.
  • Measure the impact of product changes and optimizations using statistical analysis.
  • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs).

QUALIFICATIONS

  • SQL proficiency (querying, filtering, aggregating, and joining data).
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Looker, etc.).
  • Strong analytical thinking and ability to translate data into actionable insights.
  • Python for data manipulation (a plus, but not required).
  • Understanding of A/B testing principles and basic statistical analysis.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Curiosity, attention to detail, and a passion for working with data.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • REPORTS TO: Senior Director, Data & Technology
  • LOCATION: San Francisco, CA
  • DURATION: June 16 - August 22, 2025
  • PAY: $25/hr, up to 40 hours/week
  • This is a paid opportunity, and we will work with your clinical or internship office for school credit if necessary.
  • Interns must be available to attend weekly educational Lunch & Learns, which are held every Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. (PST).
