Manager, DevOps

HappyCo is looking for an experienced DevOps Manager to co-ordinate the development, management and maintenance of our cloud environments, ensuring they are scalable, efficient, and well-optimized for our engineering teams. This role involves overseeing system performance and uptime, refining monitoring processes, and enhancing incident response to reduce downtime. You will also be responsible for upholding security and compliance standards, proactively addressing potential risks. Additionally, you will provide technical leadership and mentorship, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration. Core Responsibilities:
  • Infrastructure - Create and manage cloud infrastructure to support HappyCo software development teams.  Improve the reliability, observability, and performance of these systems.
  • Operations - Monitor the health and performance of production systems.  Improve monitoring tooling and effectiveness.  Respond to production events.  Document issues and incidents.  Drive down MTTA and MTTR.
  • Security/Compliance - Maintain a proactive posture keeping HappyCo ahead of security threats and vulnerabilities.  Follow all required processes for security and compliance.
  • Mentorship/Leadership - Identify, apply, and coach best practices across the team.


Week by Week / During your first 2-4 weeks you will:
  • Get to know our leadership, culture, and values
  • Complete our HappyCo orientation and onboarding program
  • Onboard with the DevOps team
  • Familiarize yourself with our systems and tools 
  • Read our favorite industry primers
  • Attend your first Company Wide Meeting (monthly)
  • Make your first change in our codease


During your first 1-6 months you will:
  • Get acquainted with the different departments
  • Complete deployment and rollbacks in all of our environments
  • Familiarize yourself with our on-call runbooks, processes and policies
  • Review our monitoring systems and tools to ensure levels are within reasonable parameters and adjust alerts accordingly
  • Build a working profile of your team and prepare career development plans for them
  • Be able to troubleshoot outages in any environment


During your first 6-12 months you will:
  • Build tooling and automation for engineers to improve their velocity to develop, build and deploy code
  • Complete your first team feedback, and manager upwards feedback cycle
  • Identify key risks and opportunities to be included in the next 12 months of roadmap

  • Helping teams with build or cloud infrastructure queries
  • Add to and deploy from our IaC build pipeline
  • Assist with the investigation, management, and resolution of critical incident
