Job Summary:
The Meteorologist in the Trading Meteorology group will play a vital role working directly with energy traders, schedulers, and remote operations personnel to provide them with the most accurate wind and solar energy forecasts, at time scales from minutes to days. Forecast information provided is critical for the economic and operational success of Avangrid’s fleet of generation assets. This is an on-site and not a remote-work position, reporting to the Trading Meteorology Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
Interpret meteorological data and forecasts from internal sources, third party energy forecast providers and publicly available data to produce the best possible predictions of expected wind and solar energy generation.
Provide timely, clear, and concise communication of forecast products to end-users working under very strict deadlines.
Understand and communicate forecast risk to end-users.
Produce forecasts and analyses for wind and solar farm operations, maintenance, and construction.
Perform weather analysis and programming tasks to support forecasting infrastructure and enhance forecast products and accuracy.
Maintain and enhance the technical infrastructure used for interpretation and analysis of numerical weather prediction models and other data, to produce prognostic products customized to wind and solar energy forecasting tasks.
Ability to work rotating shifts including holidays and weekends.
Adhere to effective internal controls.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least 2-years of operational forecasting experience. Candidates with less experience may be considered.
Ability to perform basic data manipulation and analysis, with the goal of improving forecasting skill, tools, and processes. Proficiency with one or more programming languages and/or analysis tools such as Python, R, JavaScript, Visual Basic, Ruby, MATLAB, Unix shell scripting.
Proficiency in the basic use of the MS Office suite and in working in MS-Windows environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree or Ph.D. with a focus on weather forecasting or related field.
Operational forecasting experience in the energy sector or in a wind forecasting application.
Exposure to AVEVA PI, SEEQ, Tableau and relational database formats.
