Located at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Savannah River Site (SRS), the laboratory develops and deploys innovative technologies to address some of the nation’s environmental, energy, and national security challenges.

The SRNL support to the Dispose program centers primarily on the Surplus Plutonium Disposition program which is responsible for disposing of 34 metric tons (MT) of weapon-grade plutonium that has been declared excess to U.S. national security requirements using a dilute and dispose strategy and transporting it to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) geologic repository for permanent disposal.
The near-term focus of the capital line-item Surplus Plutonium Disposition Project is to install three new glovebox lines and necessary support systems in the K Area at SRS.
