Job Description

Purpose:

The Senior Research Engineer I position involves the design and development of custom software solutions (mobile and/or desktop applications, web services, APIs, etc.) to meet customer requirements of the Texas A&M Center for Applied Technology. Specific technical activities include interfacing with customers to determine project requirements and desired results, managing a software development team to ensure successful delivery of software products, developing high-level prototype designs, presentations, reports, technical documentation and publications, providing training and technical support for fielded technologies, presenting research results at technical meetings, and assisting with the preparation of proposals to project sponsors. Those who are self-motivated, curious, adaptive, and exercise independent thought and judgment are the primary candidates for this opportunity. Candidates should have a desire to stay abreast of changes in technology as it relates to their work, and must be able to evaluate and identify new technologies to support projects. Candidates should be able to interface with customers to define product requirements and provide technology support as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Interface with customers to determine project requirements and desired results. (10%)
  • Assists in planning, direction and supervision of research and development projects and other technical operations (i.e., to include management of a software development team). (20%)
  • Conduct research and development activities to enable successful project completion. (20%)
  • Develop high-level prototype designs and presentations in support of research and development projects. (10%)
  • Assists in the preparation of reports, technical documentation, and publications (e.g., journal or trade articles). (10%)
  • Provide training and technical support for fielded technologies. (10%)
  • Presents or assists in the presentation of research results at technical meetings or other venues. (5%)
  • Assists in the preparation of proposals to project sponsors. (5%)
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. (10%)

What we need:

  • Master’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six years of related experience.

What is helpful:

  • Master of Science degree in Computer Science, or an accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science with an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
  • Proven experience in managing projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in object-oriented programming languages such as Java, Objective-C, Swift, C++, etc.
  • Proficiency with web development (e.g., HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, PHP, AJAX, Node.js, Angular, React, Svelte, Symfony, etc.).
  • Proficiency with web service development/interfacing (e.g., REST, GraphQL, SOAP, WSDL, etc.).
  • Proficiency with third-party software framework integration (e.g., Eclipse RCP, Apache Hadoop, Kubernetes, commercial cloud computing services, etc.).
  • Proficiency with database languages (e.g., SQL, NoSQL, etc.).
  • Proficiency with software development tools (e.g., Git, VS Code, Jira, Jenkins, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
