We are currently open to pitches from freelance reporters with business news experience for feature-length stories about important characters, trends, and stories in the local real estate market.This opportunity is perfect for motivated journalists with a knack for sourcing with colorful characters, insightful analysis of complex markets, and compelling storytelling. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute original stories to both our website and our national monthly magazine, offering in-depth features and investigative reporting relevant to the DC real estate market.About The Real Deal:The Real Deal is a leading real estate news platform headquartered in New York City, recognized for delivering in-depth and breaking stories on the key players and trends shaping the industry. We cover major markets including New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the Texas Triangle.We are currently accepting pitches from talented freelance news reporters based in Washington, DC, who are passionate about covering the intersection of money, power, and personality in the realm of real estate. TRD focuses not only on real estate but its impact on politics, finance, law, entertainment, and other business sectors.Process:Pitch, with notes on potential sources, anecdotes, data points, to TRD's editors.Once approved, craft the story on deadline, talking with important experts and characters in the world of real estate.Produce a clean, well-written narrative feature between 750 and 2,000 words.Work with TRD's editors to finalize the story, responding to their notes and questions thoroughly.Who We’re Looking For:Proven writing, interviewing, and reporting skills with the ability to produce clean, accurate copy on tight deadlines, from breaking news to long-form features.Strong narrative voice and authority in writing.Expertise and a robust network of sources in one or more of our coverage areas, including residential brokerage, commercial real estate (office, retail, industrial, development), politics and policy, and technology.Ability to analyze and interpret data from databases, property records, financial reports, and other sources to create impactful real estate industry stories.Understanding of and adherence to journalistic standards, ethics, and protocols.Business writing experience is necessary.Requirements:Must be physically present in Washington, DC for in-person reporting.At least 5 years of experience in journalism, news reporting, or a related field.Please note: this is a freelance position – Compensation will be per word based on the finished story.If you’re in Washington, DC, and have compelling story ideas that align with our coverage, we want to hear from you!
