Job Title: Teen Leadership Program 

Staff Status: Seasonal Part-Time

Hours: 20+ hours per week, schedule varies 

Wage: $15.60+/hr D.O.E.

Reports to: Senior Director of Youth Programs 

Revision Date: 3/2024

Probation: subject to Montana 12-month introductory (probationary) period


POSITION SUMMARY: The Teen Leadership Program Staff assists in the day-to-day operation

of YMCA summer camp. The Teen Leadership Program Staff oversees the YMCA’s Junior

Counselor teen leadership program, assists with summer camp food program, and assists with

the implementation of summer camp and other youth programs including but not limited to

Active 6, Afterschool, Family & Member Service programs, Rock Climbing, SPLASH, and Youth

Sports. Across all programs, the Teen Leadership Program Staff must consistently maintain the

YMCA’s high standards for best practices. This position is very visible with direct impact on the

reputation of the Missoula Family YMCA. Must be able to thrive in an environment with the

unique challenges of a non-profit community service organization. Works with very little

supervision.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Adhere to the mission of the YMCA at all times and implements the Y Core Values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Flexible part-time hours in preparation for summer months: Meet with “camp team” to create cohesive camp vision and understanding of the Junior Counselor Program.
  • During summer months for 15-20 hours/week: Lead the YMCA’s Junior Counselor teen leadership program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: establishing a culture of service-minded teen leaders; engaging teens in leadership development initiatives; working alongside summer camp staff modeling healthy professional relationships; transporting participants in YMCA vehicles; communicating with camp leadership and participant families.
  • Assist with the Summer Camp Food Program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: guiding Junior Cousnelors through routine for daily pick up, sorting, and deliver of breakfast, lunch, and snack to all YMCA summer camps; helping to maintain food preparation spaces; communicating with offsite summer camp locations about site specific needs. 
  • Assist with the implementation of YMCA youth programs including but not limited to: Active 6, Afterschool, Family Fun Time, Rock Climbing, SPLASH, Summer Camps, and Youth Sports.
  • Know and enforce YMCA emergency procedures and safety regulations in order to ensure member and program participant safety.
  • Communicate effectively with the Welcome Center and other YMCA employees to ensure accurate program registration information, coordination of shared spaces, etc.
  • Operate YMCA vehicles safely and efficiently, following all relevant laws, policies, and procedures
  • Clean and maintain office spaces, closets, buses and surrounding areas.
  • Manage the tracking of volunteer trainings and hours in program.
  • Maintain evening program/office hours as needed for programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: High school diploma or equivalent

Required: CPR & First Aid Certification & Child Abuse Prevention Training – can be obtained at the YMCA

Required: Valid driver's license with insurable drivers record – required to drive Y vehicles

Preferred: Experience with a leadership development program

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree or coursework in subject related to child psychology and development, community health, education, physical fitness, recreation management, or social work

Preferred: Class B CDL w/ passenger endorsement and no airbrake restrictions - or - willingness to obtain upon hiring – training provided and associated expenses covered by the YMCA

• Ability to attend all trainings and meetings as required, even if scheduled outside normal working or regular scheduled hours

• Present a clean, well-groomed appearance

• Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time

• Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids

• Must be able to lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds

• Frequently requires bending, leaning, kneeling, lifting and walking
