Founded in 2019 near CERN (Switzerland), Transmutex is pioneering advancements in nuclear energy, medicine, and waste recycling by leveraging an accelerator-driven system (ADS) combined with Thorium fuel containing existing long-lived radioactive waste. Our innovative approach allows to generate intrinsically safe energy while efficiently recycling spent fuel in a proliferation-resistant manner. With our approach now recognized in the U.S., too, and Transmutex subsequently awarded a grant through ARPA-E’s NEWTON program, we have established another subsidiary and invite you to join the new team implementing this groundbreaking project at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Job description
As an experienced accelerator physicist, your responsibilities are driven by the development of a highly reliable ion source and a particle accelerator beamline. They consist of:
· Lead the detailed development and optimization of beam dynamics models for the ion source and low energy beamline.
· Contribute to test bench design and ion source test to achieve high-intensity, stable proton beam with minimal beam trips.
· Collaborate with internal and external experts to implement fault-tolerant and redundant systems for ion source operation.
· Develop and execute experiments to validate ion source and beamline performance and ensure compliance with operational requirements.
· Analyze data from beam diagnostics to identify and mitigate failure causes and mechanisms, contributing to long-term system reliability.
- Participate in failure cause and mechanisms analyses and Design for Reliability-driven design reviews actively and collaboratively proposing solutions for an enhanced reliability design
Requirements
The candidates we are looking for must have:
· Ph.D. in Accelerator Physics, Particle Physics, or a related field.
· Extensive experience in beam dynamics and particle accelerator systems
· Expertise in modelling and simulation tools for beam dynamics (e.g., IBSIMU, TRACEWIN, ...).
· Strong understanding of accelerator equipment reliability, sources of failure, and design optimizations to mitigate failures.
Additionally, it will be an advantage if you have:
· Extensive experience in ion source design and operation.
· Hands-on experience with fault-tolerant system designs for accelerators.
· Familiarity with Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion sources.
· Experience with advanced diagnostic tools and AI-based data analysis for beam performance.
