Founded in 2019 near CERN (Switzerland), Transmutex is pioneering advancements in nuclear energy, medicine, and waste recycling by leveraging an accelerator-driven system (ADS) combined with Thorium fuel containing existing long-lived radioactive waste. Our innovative approach allows to generate intrinsically safe energy while efficiently recycling spent fuel in a proliferation-resistant manner. With our approach now recognized in the U.S., too, and Transmutex subsequently awarded a grant through ARPA-E’s NEWTON program, we have established another subsidiary and invite you to join the new team implementing this groundbreaking project at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Job description
This role is central to the development, testing and reliable operation of the ion source of Transmutex' accelerator. As an electronics and instrumentation engineer, you will ensure implementation of precision monitoring and control while working closely with a multidisciplinary team of physicists and engineers. Your responsibilities consist of:
- Design, develop, and implement instrumentation systems for the ion source and its associated test bench, ensuring precise monitoring and control of operational parameters.
- Integrate and calibrate sensors for diagnostics, including temperature, pressure, beam current, and other critical performance metrics.
- Develop and optimize control systems for the ion source, including signal processing and real-time data acquisition.
- Design and implement the data acquisition interface to the test bench software
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design fault-tolerant and redundant systems, as well as monitoring systems for the ion source.
- Conduct testing, validation, and troubleshooting of instrumentation and control systems during ion source commissioning and operation.
- Document system designs, test results, and operational guidelines to support long-term maintenance and scalability.
Requirements
The candidates we are looking for must have:
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in instrumentation, control systems, sensor integration, and/or in designing and maintaining electronic systems for high-reliability and industrial applications.
- Hands-on experience with data acquisition systems, sensor calibration, and signal processing.
- Proficiency in programming and scripting for automation and control (e.g., Ladder Logic, LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python).
Additionally, it will be an advantage if you have:
- Experience with ion source development, electrical systems (high-voltage systems, RF technologies and power electronics) in particle accelerators or similar high-power systems.
- Familiarity with automation and control systems (control theory and feedback systems) used in accelerator facilities.
- Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards such as IEC 61000 and electromagnetic interference mitigation.
- Knowledge in advanced diagnostic tools and AI-based data analysis for system monitoring.
- Understanding of reliability engineering principles and predictive maintenance techniques.
